Whatever happened to the idea of investing in Nepal?

I couldn't find the thread where we had talked about doing some investing to help people in Nepal with small business ventures. And I didn't think to look in the archives.

I still think it's a great idea and would like to see it happen.
I remember that several of us were interested.

Has anyone changed thier minds about this?

I think we should kick it around again and if it wouldn't cause the people any harm due to the terrorist activities there that we should implement something.
How about it Bro.? Do you think it would cause more harm than good?

This is an area that I would have to follow along with others since I haven't had any kind of experience in things of this sort.

Yvsa/Bill,

There is a local chain of stores that sells colthing made in Nepal under their own brand name- "Raj Safari", and "Austin Clothes"- go figure. I purchase these because they are relatively inexpensive, 100% cotton, they look good, and I hope that these purchases benefit the workers who made the clothes. My only concern is really how much money actually filters down the the working people at the factory. I'd hate to think these folks are working under "sweat shop" conditions.

Bill maybe you have some input on "buying Nepal" so that the economy and the workers are supported.

YVSA, by the way, thank you for the honour of sharing the info you did on the other thread. I attend Pow Wow's whenever possible, and know there is a lot to learn and understand. I have a Navajo friend who sells his jewlery there. They are another place to spend our hard-earned money in a very win-win way.

Thanks,

Finn

I would love to help all the people of Nepal but the fact is I am only one person. Uncle Bill & Yangdu have many friends and family in Nepal. This enables them to do so much for our friends there. Uncle is a fair man and makes sure the money gets to the people who need it. The more money the kamis and sarkis make the better they are able to live. This trickles down and helps others as well. The more khukuris we buy the better they get paid. From what I understand the people of Nepal may not be rich with money but they are proud and noble. I doubt they would want money any other way but earn it. I don't want to step on any toes but I feel the best way to help our friends is to KEEP BUYING KHUKURIS FROM UNCLE BILL. I know this will be hard for all of us to do.("NOT!") We all have that darned HIKV.

You are right, Sandi. We are able to get the money right into the hands of the men who do the work. We do not rely on middlemen of any kind and that's a blessing. The years I lived in Nepal showed me that it was rare, indeed, for the middlemen to pass on to the workers what they deserved. And government projects seemed to be the worst offenders.
