... the mini-Military?

... the Wegner fixed blade?

IIRC, the mini-Military had actually had some prototype pieces made, maybe even sent out for testing? That was quite a while back, and I haven't heard anything else in a long time. And obviously no news at the Shot Show. So, I figured I'd stir the bushes around here a bit.

The Wegner FB got spanked by the MIGHTY Lum Tanto FB coming up this fall....

The Wegner is nice too. But not as nice

...And a good thing too. Never did much like Wegner or his knives. Choice between a boring hunter and a really cool Lum tanto ain't no choice at all! Hopefully it'll be out just in time for my birthday.

OK, so we've covered the Wegner fixed blade

-- which, by the way, despite the admittedly better looks of the tanto, will spank the tanto is actual usage.

But, what about the Mini-Military???

Oh, and I just read in the Shot Show Pics thread over in General that Spyderco had a proto (concept?) of a Fred Perrin Fixed Blade Military, a real Lum Spanker!!!

and BEG!

Sorry, JK, I like the looks of the Lum Tanto-- heck, any tanto-- but in actual usage, I have yet to use a tanto that I thought could hold a candle to a normal blade. I haven't used a REAL tanto, though; only the Americanized tanto. IIRC, the Lums are Americanized tantos, correct?

The Lum FB tanto looks cool, but the Wegner fixed blade would open up a can of whoop ass on it. Too bad is didn't come to fruition.

I'd still take the Tanto (or a BM Nimravus Cub in M2 for that matter.) over any "Fixed Blade Military." Now a production Perrin Street Bowie on the other hand would make the choice tougher... (Or more expensive

Ok, Americanized tantos look cool but are the worst for utility. The Wenger fixed blade would rock, baby. Please Sal, please come out with the Wenger fixed blade with an in the waist band sheath. Oh, VG-10, 440V, ATS 34 or 55 would be great.

Utility? What's that? I thought that knives were things to hoard and impress one's friends with...

Oh, well, in THAT case...

Thinking about it from a different angle, and looking at the Lum picture again, I could see possibly wanting the Lum more than the Wegner. The different angle being PURELY "martial bladecraft" in nature. While I have no doubts about the Wegner design's ability as a defensive blade, the Lum handle could be a better choice, maybe. I'm not into MBC, so I wouldn't know.

Oh well..... I like the Wegner. And the Lum tantos. And the Fixed Blade Military. And I think I would really like the mini Military, if it ever comes into existence.

I had hoped that the mini Military would be high on the list of new spydercos. I love the looks and feel of the Military but it is just too dern big. I prefer a Calypso Jr. or Worker sized knife. (IMO the perfect size for everyday carry) To me the military would be perfect if you could just reduce the handle and blade size proportionately until the blade was about 3 inches in length. Anyone else agree??

The thing with the Lum tantos is that they take the tanto concept to a new stage. I agree that most tantos (americanized, that is) we have seen in the past are pretty useless (especially chisel grinds). But if you look at the Lum ones you´ll notice that the blades curve along with the ergonomic handle makes one hell of a utility knife. Forget about BM 970, MOD Razorback and all of those "posing knives". This one works! Hard.

Pelle, are you talking about the long, primary edge? Or are you talking about a curving, or softening, of the secondary point of the geo-tanto style?

I'll have to take another look at the Lum tanto's, if I can find a picture of one.

O. K. I went and found a good picture of a Lum tanto, and I'm sold. I could see that being a ****-hot fixed bladed knife. I'm NOT convinced it would be as capable a utility knife as a fixed bladed Wegner, BUT, I COULD see it being a good worker.

So, as far as I'm concerned, either/or. BUT, I would still like to know what happened to the idea of the Wegner fixed blade. Last I heard, it was being evaluated, IIRC; sooooooo?

Pelle:

Thanks for the link to the Lum tantos. I've been looking for pics of them to drool over since there are no more on the Robertson Custom Cutlery site. I've lusted after that small one since I first saw it months ago, but can't really justify US$450 = CAN$675 + shipping + tax on a knife right now.

Spyderco to the rescue!

Hey Rockspyder. The Mini military is being redesigned with a compression lock. Probably won't see even a proto before summer.

The Wegner design needed some more work before we could make protos.

The Lum "not-a-real-tanto" is different and quite refined.

sal

Well, there you have it Rockspyder... A Wegner FB is in the works after all.
Sal, any chance we could see a bigger picture of the Lum tanto than the small one available now (knifecenter?)? Please? Please, please? Please with sugar on the top?

Mini-Military (w/compression lock even
eek.gif
): GOOD

Wegner fixed blade: GOOD

Lum "not-quite-a-tanto": GOOD

Three that I'll have to buy. Hope you're still thinking BG42 for the Mini-Mil. I think I'm glad that only the Lum is even close to release. Otherwise, it would be turning out to be a REALLY expensive year.

Thanks for the info, Sal. Now, about that Almite...

Oh, and I agree with Pelle... please a bigger picture of the Lum Tanto!
