I'm thinking I'd prefer a beater/chopper/user as thick as my new ASH1 (~.32") and basically the same design but a little longer (without spending any more than I have to).

Where's the low-price sweet spot likely to be in terms of the most INFI for the buck that's .32 and longer than an ASH1?

Please keep in mind that I don't want to pay more because XYZ is collectible, etc, I want the super-common .32-thick ugly-duckling type of thing that I can likely get for a great deal used... perhaps even trading my ASH1 for it (which I have $432 in).

For example, does a $400 .32 one from the FSH-family exist, how about a $300 .32 one from the FBM-family?

Thanks.

First thing that jumps to mind is a FFFBM and they can be found pretty readily on the exchange in the $400 and up price. Hope that helps, it definately would fit the bill and then some  I 've never seen a FSH in that vicinity, nor the FBM.

What they said, FFBM. I don't think you're not going to find one under $400 though, not even if it's already been beaten.

Yer not gonna find a beaten one for $400.

And FSH??? Even beaters start more than that. (Altho I think I got my convexed "beater" for $400 last summer - probably worth a might-bit more than that now.)

If you're patient, deals can be found, however "beaten" doesn't diminish a Busse's value, period. If it is not a queen, it is still worth close because it's INFI. If you want a beater don't expect to steal one, that is more rare that I like my Ribeye!

Yeah, on the high end of things, a HOGFSH would be my top choice. NOT cheap.

After that, the FFBMs for sure, which as mentioned above, can be found at reasonable prices.

bad news, even the smallest of INFI sinks...

If you wanted just a little longer you might considering buying an ASH1 or finding someone nearby who will let you check one out. You would be surprised at what you can accomplish with the ASH and the FFBM is not just a little bigger. It's TWICE the knife. As mentioned the HOGFSH is probably what you are looking for... except for price.

The ASH certainly isn't a main chopper but you can throw smaller chips with it all day long and it doesn't beat you up. Great overall camp knife.

basic 9 for 350$. only 1/4", and it's full flat ground - but you can't beat the the price, or the ergonomics.

The best bang for the buck INFI has got to be the FFBM. They can sometimes be had for right around 400. It would be a good deal if you can find HOGFSH at that price. Good luck trying to find any large INFI blades at 300. That will not be a easy task.

Now if you move away from INFI and still want to stay within the Busse family line of knives then that is a whole nuther story. The Scrapyard DogFather is the most awesome performing large knife for the money Period!

You're probably looking at lots of patience waiting for a "project" knife to surface in the exchange. Something that someone has stripped and reprofiled and otherwise mucked with. They don't come up often, but it happens. I'd guess it will be some flavor of FBM, just because those seem to be a bit more common than FSH's. Second guess would be something that turns up at a 'ganza or show (if you can make it to one). Third guess would be a FBM that turns up in the Company Store. Keep trying, and the right blade will find you.

thanks for the replies.

looks like a HOGFSH is basically the length and weight and profile I'm leaning toward, but they appear to be less common and regularly fetch premium prices(even for Busses). Nothing wrong with the FFBM other than being longer than I need, but it would leave me with more options.

I appreciate the suggestions and will keep my eyes open for a good-enough deal to suit my needs.

+1 vote for a CG FFBM. But can you imagine if you were hiking along and you saw a GW in a creek like that?! Man, that would make my week!

you wouldn't be worried that it was a human trap set by some carnivore?
