What's a finish

Wanted to know how a finish is put on on say a black metal knife. I wanted to change the color on a black metal steel knife. I used a high temp. spray paint. But desided I dont like it and want to change it back. I thought of electrostatic spray or powder coat. Or laquer. What do manufacturer's use?

I've seen products called Gun-kote I think that are used on blades. they are a laquer that you spray on and bake the whole lot in the oven to set it. best done before handle materials are on!!! They are available at brownell's or any gun shop I imagine.
