That is a really good question.
I would say no.
I say that because aside from folding, and lacking a locking mechanism, they have no more in common than a Sebenza and a Bose Back Pocket, and they are not related in my book.
I am assuming that all friction folders are single blade knives? I haven't seen a friction Trapper, or Stockman, or Muskrat but that doesn't mean they don't exist, does it?.
History tells us the ancient Romans were the first to invent a folding style knife. They had no spring steel then for a 'back spring', so they made the first friction folders... I make 'em with a handy little 'BudLight' opener. Lots of pics in my gallery...
