I told my friends I was getting a knife for 120 (BM42)...everyone told me its not worth. I can't think of I good reason to buy it. What do you guys think?

First off, I think you might be able to find it for a couple of bucks less. Secondly, if all you have is a jag or something similar in quality, it is worth buying a 42. They are rock solid, end of story. They don't come really sharp, but I haven't bought one BM that came "extremely sharp" as they say. Go ahead and get one...you won't regret it.

Well, you said in an earlier post that your Jaguar broke... isn't that reason enough? From what I hear, the 42 will last longer than ten Jag's. So you can buy Jag after Jag or you could just buy a 42 and stop worrying about your favorite toy breaking.

Good reason to buy a 42? QUALITY.

It is also one of the lightest production balisongs out there, and is most likely the BEST on the market.

P.S. If you haven't already gotten your bali ordered, you should talk to Mike Dye, email me or hunt him down in the exchange to get his email.

It's worth it, period...you wont regret it, you will love it, and like steve said, you can probobly find one cheaper than 120.

Does the color on the anodized handles ever wear off? You guys think the prices might drop if I wait awhile? Not being cheap...just wondering. I heard they are selling it faster than Benchmade is making them. Also, is Benchmade planning to release anymore more balisongs?

The anodize will wear off eventually, it is basically a coating.

Like I said, if you want it for <120 talk to Mike Dye, look him up in the exchange area under knives wanted, damn fine deal on NIB 42S's.

my bm42 sucks....but then again i don't have one

I'm going to have to disagree with the comment on them not coming as extremely sharp; mine are sharp as hell. then again, it might just be mine

My BM42 came extremely sharp: sharper than any other knife I have. Reason to buy one? Well, not only is it leaps and bounds better than a Jag, its much more fun to play with. I almost lost interest in balis, that was until I got the 42. Now I flip for hours each day as opposed to when I had a jag, I never flipped more than 5 min.

I look at a quality knife the same way I look at quality shoes. I could buy a pair of $20 shoes that might last a couple of months of solid wear. Instead I buy a pair that costs about $100-120 and they last me a couple of years. They also look and fit far better than the cheap shoes. It's the same with balisongs. I used to buy a new Jaguar for about twenty bucks, at the martial arts store, every few months. Like cheap shoes, the Jags were never great. I always had to replace the pins and it was a clunky p.o.s..
It's okay to want to save money, but it's not true that you save money by buying many inexpensive things instead of one high quality thing.
Say you buy only four Jaguars, at twenty bucks a pop, to last as long as a $110 BM42. Or you buy more than four, but get them a little cheaper than twenty dollars. You will like the Benchmade a ton more the whole time you have it then you will ever like a brand new Jag. So it's worth the extra thirty bucks. But your 42 will last much longer then four or five Jaguars.

Little Chaozu,
I just got my BM42AS, and I did not think it would be so different from the Jaguar/Herbertz ones (from what I saw on the pictures). But I was wrong. There's no comparison. It's very light : I like it as soon as I took it in my hands. The Anodized color is really nice. The blade is perfect.
But you're right, it's expensive... it's not expensive for what it is, it's expensive in absolute (for a knife in general).

So what I may recommend you, I don't know you're maybe student (?), is to decide to work X days for this knife (calculate the number of days depending on the salary of the job :-) ). So you'll think "I've worked X days for this knife, I deserve it", and it won't represent you 100USD anymore in your mind. And you know... it should last you all your life.

Little_chaozu, just tell em "cuz you want it". I'd bet most of your friends have at least hundred bucks worth of cd's that they don' listen to anymore/bought for just that one song. Better yet tell them "They don't make anything more expensive or I'd have it instead" and then just smile. That's what I do.

My friend started going off on "how rich I was" and "how I got the money" when I told him I bought a weight bench. It was about 110 bucks, I looked at Sunday ads for a few weeks(came in with free weight set too).

I don't understand him. He just finished paying me back for a $200 Airsoft gun that he hides in his closet most of the time(his parents don't know). I bet my bench was a lot cheaper than his N64 and all his games too.

Furthermore, there's a treadmill thing, a telescope, and a grand piano in his house.

Bet he doesn't use those every day.

By the way, his dad's a doctor, and his mother's a dentist. My parents work in our noodle factory. I'm willing to bet his family makes more money than mine.

Anyway, what's wrong with spending a hundred bucks or so on a quality tool that you can use daily, for utility and art, that should last you for years?

You know, I really don't see how my friends' interests in cell phones and CDs and Playstation games are any more worthy than mine in knives.

Whats a good reason? Would you depend on a POS bali if your hide was on the line? I depend on my knives for a certain amount of self protection and won't count on a cheap knife that could break under hard usage. It's like Les DeAsis told me along time ago "you'll break your wrist before you will break one of these knives". If you only want a knife as a toy, go buy a cheapy, if you want a knife to depend on, buy a Bench-Made.
