I'm looking for as thin as possible of a stocking cap to keep in my coat's breast pocket. I'd appreciate any recommendations for or against any you have tried.
I decided on a thin merino wool beanie. Not that one, but a very similar one that comes in a color I prefer. I hadn't even thought of wool before posting this thread, but I've had very good experience with merino wool in other contexts, so I should have.
Polar fleece with Thinsulate works great. Wore mine at -45 in the Yukon on a caribou hunt (under a hood). Plus lots of other layers, of course. Merino wool is also good, but synthetics don't trap moisture and are lighter and more durable IMHO.
