I have a warthog tusk I just picked up from Eaby.

At the time I ordered it I sure thought it was a solid section of tooth and that I could turn it into a knife handle with little trouble.

However the tusk turns out to be hollow and so I now need some type of filler to set the sub-tang into.

Could you guys tell me what works as a filler for horns and other hollow knife handles?

Alan,

I use Accraglass when I need to fill some. It's a great adhesive also. Very pricey though. Probably could add some kind of filler to it to make it go farther. I keep jars full of wood or antler grindings to add to gaps and such.
I'm sure someone has another fix.

I want to make sure you understand my problem...

The warthorg tusk is empty inside the shell.
I have to find a way to fill in an area about 2 or 3 inches deep by about 1 inch wide?

would two or three full shots of 2-ton epoxy work?

Like Old Wolf said, Accraglass is very good. It is also expensive and for that big a fill, maybe too expensive. If color is a problem, you will need to go with one of the base epoxies (uncolored) like Accraglass or West epoxy.

JB Weld is just as strong but very dark and I expect that will show through. I would check in your area and see if you can find a boat builder that will sell you a cup of West for the project. If you need to color it, get white pigment from a paint store and tint it to match.

Alan, you can use the two-ton epoxy, but do not do it all at once.I would say no more than half a tube at a time. The reason being, is you want the inside to dry thoroughly and the epoxy, when used this way will build an extreme amount of heat due to the chemical reaction. I did this many years ago to a Springbok horn and it was smoking and way too hot to touch. It didn't harm it but with a tusk it might crack it.Hope this helps. Dave:)
