What's a good way to do an online knife raffle?

A good friend and band-mate of mine, a talented and accomplished artist blacksmith who's helped me out in the past, just lost his house and everything in it in a fire. No insurance, a total loss. There's a local benefit for him soon, and I thought to donate a knife for auction. Then I thought that a raffle in an online knife community might generate better proceeds- I live in hicksville and I don't know that people around here largely have much appreciation for an art knife.

So, I thought I'd ask whether there is an appropriate area of BF to do such a thing, or if anyone knows of good options to do this sort of thing online.

Any thoughts you all have about this would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's a great idea to help another individual out........check with the moderators if it's cool i'm in

I know in my state it's illegal to do online raffles. I think most states have similar laws. I'm not saying you, but it would be a ripe place for people to scam!

With that said, please count me in for some tickets if you get it going!! PM me if you need to.

I've seen it done on eBay. Basically, it's an auction with a description that makes it clear the proceeds are going to a specific charitable cause.

I'd also check with Bruce Bump, who recently concluded the raffle for the CKCA knife.

I was thinking Ebay would be the best legal route to go as well. As with anything on Ebay take lots of good pictures and give a clear, glowing description of the knife and set a reserve so that it doesn't go for a song. The next hurdle to jump is a way to get the word of the auction out. Most online communities like BFC do not allow linking to live auctions even if they are for a charitable cause:( but there has to be some way that you can get the word out to the community without breaking the rules. Check with Spark and the Mods to see how they can help give you ideas on how to get the word out.

I believe Ed Cafferty is doing something similar for his church on here. It is linked to ebay. I think it was called just knife auction. I have to go now but when I get back I will look more into it. Good luck and I would be willing to participate.

They do a raffle on KnifeDogs on a regular basis too i think.

Raffles are in violation of Paypal terms of service.
You can call it something else, but if you or someone mentions the word raffle in a payment or note, (and they will)

you have to be prepared to lose that account.

I see his feather knife is up for auction.. I love that knife. If I had the money I'd be bidding :P Good luck with your raffle, I think it's a great cause.

Rev, I was thinking about that too. I'd probably get a better price for it selling on the exchange than auctioning it around here. We'll see, I'm still working on the knife. Could be I'll screw it up somehow and how to sell it will become a moot point...

Thanks for the input, all.
