I have a never used Gerber drop point folder with 3 3/8" blade that is approximately 12 -15 years old that will not remain open in the locked position due to the spring bar having fallen out. I took it to a local custom knife maker and he said it could not be fixed without tearing the knife apart which would result in a cost greater than the value of the knife. I hate to just throw this knife away as it is new and has a good (wide- strong and sharp) blade on it. Is there any way that I can convert this to a "fixed blade" knife at a reasonable cost, or does anyone know if it could be returned to Gerber for repair at minimal to no cost?? If anyone thinks it can be converted to a fixed balde I would appreciate them pointing me to web sites for handle materials and instructions on how to do this. TIA

I'd throw it out. Why? Because in a nutshell it will no longer function as designed. Therefore, there's a good possibility it will fail.

The other thing to consider is if you have already used 1 hour of you time researching how to get this knife fixed, you spent more $ (of your time) then the knife is worth.

Before you just give up and throw it away take at look at this page,
http://www.gerberblades.com/questions.html - it the Gerber Warranty FAQ from their web site. If nothing else, it might be worth contacting them to see if they can help you.

My other thought is you might want to post in the Exchange Section to see if you can trade it for something. Who knows, someone over there might need your blade, or handles to repair one of their knives...

Good Luck !!

Gerber web site states they offer a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser excluding abused or misused items. Since the knife has not been used or abused I am going to take a chance and send it to them for repair or replacement. The most I will be out is $5-$6 for shipping. Seems like a reasonable chance to take. Thanks for your help.

Open it up, that is the blade in the open position and then fill the handle full of JB Weld. I mean all the way full until it is running over. When it has dried/cured for 24 to 36 hours grind/sand/file the unwanted JB Weld off and you will have a fixed blade.
