WHATS all this Hype about THE HYPER?
A Review, by Sifu Dr. Jan L. Miller
* Overall Length (inches): 6.5"
* Blade Length (inches): 2 3/4"
* Blade Material: 440C Steel
* Handle Material: G10
* Carry System: Deep Carry Pocket Style Clip
Boker does it again! They have made another superbly designed knife called the Hyper, the brainchild of knife designer Chad Los Banos. In the wake of enormous appeal for the Chad Los Banos Subcom Creations, another small knife that thinks its a big knife has hit the selves at your local dealers. Dont pass on this one! Boker sent me this knife for testing and review. The Hyper just melted into my hand once out of the box. To my astonishment the 2 ¾ blade felt like a 4 blade in my hand, I had to grab a ruler and measure it to make sure I was really holding a 2 ¾ blade. The handle is made from G10 and allows for a secure grip in many positions. There are really nifty cut-outs in the handle which not only reduce the weight of the knife but also facilitate rapid changes in grip positions with ease. The inside edges of those cut-out were a bit sharp to the feel at first and some might even experience a little discomfort to their fingertips for awhile. It does take a little getting use to. It seems like the more you use the knife the more those edges seem to smooth themselves out. The grinds on the blade are particularly functional. I was able to do some pretty deep cutting into a variety of different materials, which is surprising for a smaller blade. Lock up was very tight and there was no evidence of any blade play whatsoever. Double thumb studs on the blade makes this knife user friendly to not only right handed people but to lefties as well. The jimping on the blades spine is well executed. The jimping around the handle is strategically place to offer a secure grip while using the knife.
Two things that really got me excited about this knife are the blade finish and the deep carry pocket style clip. I have done a lot of cutting with this knife during daily chores and have yet to mar or even scratch the finish. The color of the finish an almost gun metal blue/gray is very pleasing to the eye. The deep carry pocket style clip was a great idea as it allows the knife to almost disappear when clipped inside a pocket.
The Hyper came to me razor sharp out of the box and retained a very sharp edge for a very long time after many cutting tasks. I wouldnt hesitate a moment to add this little gem to your knife collection of users. Its a great all around utility knife for everyday chores. If you like the Subcom and all of its variants you will absolutely love the Hyper.
