what is the best all-round knife

Maybe if you let us know what knife tasks you do while being "tactical" and what knife tasks you do while in survival mode, we can give you a better idea of which is better for them.

Coming from it blind as I haven't held either one....

Typically if you are going to have just ONE knife, I'd suggest the smaller of the two as the added length tends to get in the way of closer jobs. BUT, in this case, I like the looks of the 6's handle better and I'm a sucker for full flat grind.

Armchair suggestion - Esee 6

(but since this is in General not Esee forum, go look at the Busse kin especially Rats like Ratmandu and Rodent 6, or even 5 & 7. ;) )

Between those would definitely pick the esee 6. The 5 at 1/4" is way too thick plus it's saber ground so it is way thick at the edge. The 6 is 3/16" which is still plenty strong.

I've had both, the scales are exactly the same on both, the 6 is a better all around knife. Both feel pretty blocky in the hand I like a little palm swell instead of the flat slabs on the esee's.

Yep. I have an Esse 6 and a Becker BK2 (essentially the same as the Esse 5). The 6 is handier because if its longer, narrower blade and grind.

If I were limted to choosing between the two, I would get the ESEE 6 primarily due to thinner bar steel. I like the ESEE 4 and I feel it can do most anything you want to throw at it. But honestly, in this price range, I like the BK-16 the best and it is a smaller knife. If you want a bigger Becker, the BK-7 works well and I would rather have it over the ESEE 6.
