I have noticed a current trend of photos being posted showing broken blades.
What has suprised me is that all these blades have been non-stainless blades, among them has been a Becker(BK 7 I think),CS Trailmaster, and a Swamprat M6 to name but a few off the top of my head!
All of these I have been led to believe are the toughest of the tough and if any blades should break during battoning etc it should be a stainless blade right?I will admit the tests these have been put through were extreme !
So my question is are we just working our high carbon(non-stainless)blades harder than our stainless blades or is there more to this?
I have seen one badly chipped stainless and I believe it was a Benchmade Rant.
Your views please !

I haven't come across any of those threads, but you have to realize there are thousands of these knives produced, flaws will occur, and as you mentioned, some of the tests they were put through were extreme.

With no more references than that, I can't comment specifically, but it doesn't sound like an epidemic of substandard knives. Maybe one or two stories brought others to mention their own experiences. How many of these are current, or is the seemingly greater number simply an artifact of the discussion process?

I fully agree with everything you say but where are all the photos of flawed stainless steel blades ?

Okay, not only am I ignorant, but I'm being retarded right now. Sorry, you said "non-stainless steel blades".

I don't know why there seems to be an unusual number of carbon blades breaking, so I certainly couldn't say why there doesn't seem to be an equal number of stainless.

Maybe no one is surprised when the stainless break? :p

Again, until we look at each case on its own merits, we have no idea what, if anything, is going on.

The only broken blades I have seen are from Cliff Stamp's test-to-failure posts. I have also seen one of his pics get used out of context in a troll post.

Esav may be on the right track. I think people get the idea that their carbon steel blade should be indestructible other than rust. When those carbon steels are touted as being so far superior to the stainless steels, it is easy to get that impression, especially if you know as little about steel as I do :D Then, when that carbon steel blade breaks, they are shocked. It couldn't possibly be THEIR fault, it must have been a defective blade. Better post pictures on the forum to show everyone that ______________(insert brand name here) knives are no good!

I have broken a blade or two in what I consider normal use. I have even had a manufacturer tell me that what I consider normal use is in fact a "heavy duty cutting task".
I have broken a few others over the years doing stupid stuff. I know when it is my fault, and I don't try to blame the tool.

Did you read the part where the guy drove the knife through an oak-tree after beating on it with a pipe wrench for about 8 hours before it broke? He was intentionally trying to break it! If that doesn't constitute abuse, I don't know what does...

FWIW the guy who posted that thread has since vanished (last on the forum 9/7/06). He was very troll-like in his postings, and almost seemed to want to prove he could break them. He certainly made his posts sound like they just broke and neglected to mention all the details as to HOW they broke.

Sorry to take this bit under a microscope, but AFAIK that's the only example of a busted Swamp Rat I've seen in person, yet. I'd still trust them with my life.

I can't even count how many knives I retip in any given year for forum members and good ole boys and hunters around me here local and thats just me in my humble little shop in Okie territory. Blades break because people do things they shouldn't be doing with them a lot and thats what happens when you use your knife to pry up staples instead of the proper tool but also because sometimes the steel is just not that good or it just got hit in the wrong place just the right way.

I see more stainless blade breaks than carbon blades. I think people work their carbon blades harder though especially when it comes to the bigger knives in that steel.
