Hey everybody. Sorry I haven't been around. I started a new position with an outfit whose owner actually has integrity. He has already raised the bar for me a dozen times since I started 2 weeks ago. It's nice to know that when you go the extra mile you will be appreciated instead of being told it took to long.

I just wanted to inform you of whats been happening on my end. It's been near 4 years since Mace and I started with this venture. Since than, I've had to move the entire operation from a huge warehouse that belonged to a friend of mine to a 2 car garage(Same one my shop is in.)

Because of the lack of room I decided to rent a garage cheap. I had all the 1095 (about 15,000 lbs.) and 3,200 lbs of W-2 that I've slowly been collecting for the last 8 months.

Apparently someone took interest in it's scrap value and decided to alleviate me of all the W-2 and at least 6,000 lbs of 1095. The W-2 was in slabs from 2 1/4"down to 1" thick and I had planned on cutting it into bars so guys without power hammers could have a go at making beautiful "Don Hanson" type Hamons. At this point there is no recourse. It's probably already been shipped from China back to the USA in the shape of a toaster. Next time you buy one think of me.

A month later I was LAID OFF do to a lagging economy. I was alright with that cause the steel came in a week before and I needed the time. As it turns out UPS decided that my packaging methods weren't up to snuff and after 3 years of doing it the exact same way they decided to NAIL me for $6.50 on every bundle I've shipped for the last 3 months. We are, need I say, in negotiations as we speak. We will be shipping in heavy wall tubing from this point on.

When the steel arrived there was 14 cents a pound tacked on for scrap charges. 10,000 x .14 = $1,400.THAT SUCKED.

I've had to shut down the PayPal account because some kid from Hong Kong decided to hack in and permanently borrow $461.00 for Online game time. Fortunately I caught the little bastard in time and stopped the transaction. Now I'm trying to remember all my new passwords.

My reward in all this is seeing the pieces that are being made by all of you. Trust me, it ain't about the money. Last week at Ashokan on Saturday night when we had the forges going I looked around and realized that, with one exception, every piece of steel being worked came out of my garage. It felt good.

My apologies for any screwed up or delayed orders. I'm a 1 man shop. I will, in the future, try to be more efficient and more aware of your needs.

At this point I would ask a favor of all of you. My E-Mail address is njsteelbaron@gmail.com. I would so appreciate, if you would spend a little time and send me pictures of the knives you've made. I'd love to see what all of you have been doing and that the effort is worth continuing.

Thank you so much,
Aldo

PS- Steve, glad to hear you nailed the heat treat. Hope the rest of you end up with the same results.

Hey Aldo,

I told Indian George you better have a good story for not making the hammer-in and bringing me and my high school students some steel. Well, you sure have a whopper! Sorry about the bad breaks. Theft is out of control these days. Some one just hoofed it with my only chunk of mammoth ivory. Years ago someone pinched a foot+ piece of narwhal ivory I had. I'm glad to hear the positive news about your new job. If I ever get ahead of these damn Honolulu city living expenses I'll order some stuff from you. I want to be one of the guys hammering on your steel too!

All the best, Phil

You're a good man, Brother Aldo, and I appreciate you.
I know you have gone to extreme lengths to fulfill a void in this business with offering QUALITY KNOWN STEEL, and have done so at a high personal cost.
My hat is off to you.
Can't believe I've been making knives as long as I have, and still have not finished out my first damascus knife, but as soon as it gets done it will be a 1084/15N20 Ivory Bowie, and it'll be your steel!

F---ing scrappers , I had a couple POS scavengers walk in to my yard and try and grab the pile of springs I have and my two make shift anvils, luckily I was home and was able to chase them off. I guess a 6' 3" 280 pound dude with a bat will do that. Those clowns need to learn some manners

Hope new job is good and steady for you

take care

jimi

I just find it disturbing to hear of all of the thefts I read about here; knives, steel, ivory, anvils.... geeze...

I sure am glad I live on an Island with one road on and off that goes over a bridge as it discourages theives and other bad types. We still get an occasional break in but when caught it usually ends up bieng some kid living here on the Island.... geeze.....

I have already tore into the steel I got from you at Ashokan. I will have some pics soon. I was sorry to hear about all the steel being stolen. Believe me I cried a little inside when I heard.

Take care

Nice to hear from you,Aldo-Its good to know you haven't fallen off the face of the earth!:D-Sorry to hear about the issues with the scrappers, the UPS,and the little s#!t-hang in there things will get better!

Shawn

You had 1" W2  And it all got Stolen!:thumbdn::mad::grumpy::( I have been lookin for 1" W2 for a while! If ya get any more, I'd love to be a customer of yours! I dont have a power hammer so anything 1.25" down to 5/8" would be cool. Man that stuff you've been battling recently sure bites. Will keep ya in my prayers for all that.

I know it may not be said much Aldo, but we really do appreciate all you do for us knuckleheads. Take your time and take care of what's important, then worry about your orders, etc....

I can say that because MINE showed up :)

Aldo keep it up man. It is a good feeling knowing there is someone who can help us with our steel addiction. I just started in on a piece of your 1095 for a new cutting knife, forges real nice. Hang in there it will get better.
By the way e-mail sent.

Brion

Aldo, you've been outstanding to work with every time- even though we both sometimes forget we have email accounts for a few days :D

I'm not very artsy in my knives, but here's rockywolf's 1084 forged edc that's a recent one

Aldo, I will post up some pics soon. I have the steel you sent and I hope to make a knife that will live up to this thread.

I haven't gotten my steel yet (it's not taking long or anything, i just ordered recently) but I can't wait. I am sorry to hear of your hard times, seams like the best people get tested the most. All I know of you is from this website but you always struck me as a great guy. It is a huge benefit for me to be able to order steel from you and know I am getting what I asked for. Not to mention your prices are great. You are an asset to the knife makers here, so thank you. It will be my first forged blade but I will post a pictures when I am done forging and when its finished.

Aldo, Nice to see a post. Love your 1084 and 1095 I picked up from you at blade. Let me know when you get some more 1 1/2" wide 1084. And Jimi 280? I wouldn't have thought an ounce over 265 :D
