What's good to clean old wood inserts before finishing?

I am trying to restore a quality old italian switchblade knife. I usually finish my wood handles with linseed oil mixed with mineral spirits, but before I do that, I thought these inserts might benefit from a light cleaning. What's a good product to use? I thought Murphy's Oil would probably leave a residue.

as memory serves, mineral spirits are the cleaner of choice for wood handles over on HI forum. Love the khuks, but to get it shiny the kamis always endup with rouge caked in the wood handles. Hence, the mineral spirits
