What's in your camp box?

Back from a week with the scouts. I'm tweaking up my camp box for the next outing.

Main thing I want is suggestions on month long storage sheaths for the kitchen knives. They are just low end kitchen knives but will work well if treated well.

I've debated taping some sheathes up out of cardboard, but that's kind of hard on the steel for storage, isn't it? Guess I could get some of that low acid stuff for paper storage and photos. Budget is an issue and so is space. Other good ideas?

If you want some simple edge protectors & are willing to spend about $10 or so, get a square foot or so of kydex. Doesn't need to be finished nicely like a sheath - just cut a piece that will cover the blade, heat it up, fold it over the blade & throw a couple of heavy books on it until it cools. It should provide good protection for the blade, and it may spark you interest in making your own sheaths.

i wouldnt suggest the cardboard as its dangerous having a sheath that is inadequate. kydex is a great idea, a bit of kydex and a handful of pop rivets would be perfect. other great ideas could include heavy duty canvas and a few rivets and some strong thread, or if you have a bit more cash try some full grain leather. put a rivet at the top of the sheath about half an inch down from the top to stop the blade cutting through and into your fingers.

Phil,
I found cheap kitchen knife blade protectors at a kitchen shop in the local mall. I cut the length to size for the smaller blades. BTW, I am carrying them in a BSA nylon roll with the other cooking utensils. I have had it for some time and customized to suit my needs over the years. I'd like to say I went looking for these blade protectors, but I came across them when looking for something else for my wife. Even blind squirrels find acorns occasionally.

Phil,
RokJok nailed it with those web sites. The blade protectors I have are pretty secure and have not come off even when the gear was being jostled about. I wouldn't use one as a sheath on my belt though.

Thanks, those look good. These are just for storage in the box between uses and trips. Looks perfect.

Thanks again,

Phil

One thing I forgot to mention is to check for the edge guards at kitchen supply stores in your area. As JimM noted, they can often be procured locally. When we're talking just a few bucks for the item, paying shipping for web purchases becomes a substantial additional cost.

Another alternative, if you're handy with woodworking, is to make a storage box with slots for the blades and a lid that locks the knives in place when the lid is closed.

I considered a wood block, but I lack the tools and skill to do it right. I had already checked locally for those edge guards after learning of them.

All good advice though.
