Just wondering what everyone puts in their trail mix.

Here's what I put in mine:

Sunflower kernels
M&Ms
Chex cereal and/or Cheerios
raisins (sometimes)
roasted soy nuts
banana chips
honey roasted cashews

I'm always experimenting with new ingredients, so I'm always interested in hearing what people put in their "mixes".

Mixed nuts with extra Cashews
coconut
chocolate or peanut butter chips or Reese's Pieces or M&M's
banana chips
cut up dried peaches, pineapple, etc.

When I first heard of GORP in 1975, my buddy told me it stood for 'Good Old Raisens and Peanuts'. Since then I've moved uptown a bit. Cashews, Raisens, Peanuts, Dates, M&Ms.

dry roasted peanuts
peanut M+M's
dried pineapple bits(this tastes WONDERFUL in the backcountry!)
cashews
Crasins(cranberries)

Dry roast & honey roast peanuts
Shelled pistachios
Whole roasted almonds
Dried pineapple pieces
Raisins
Craisins
Coconut flakes/chunks

ROFL! I'm saving the squirrel for pot pie - I'll make some next time I see you! I use Bisquick for the topping - gives it a nice brown, fluffy topping! You'll love it I promise! :D

***Edited because I couldn't make an icon with the tongue sticking out and I haven't found a middle-finger icon! ;)

Yeah, because there's a chance in hell I'm gonna put THAT in my mouth.

Which tastes worse: Bisquick or squirrel?

Geez.

No one has mentioned Grapenuts yet. Gives it a nice crunch.

My favorite has equal parts of:
rasins
peanuts
M&M's
Grapenuts
sunflower seeds

M&M's make it sweet, sunflower seeds make it salty and Grapenuts makes it crunchy. What else could you want? :D

BTW - I have never tried the dried pineapple. Where is a good place to buy some?

I start with granola, then add:

Chopped peanuts
Coconut
Dried pineapple
Dates

I try to work it so that I stay close to the carb/protein ratio recommended by Backpacker Magazine (about 75/25)

Use different flavors of granola and add in whatever dried fruits that would go well with it.

Oh yeah - I like to use my gorp like cereal when I'm in a base camp. Pour vanilla soy milk over it for a super-nutritious bowl of cereal that will rock your world!

Content:

50% raisins
50% peanuts
10% coconut flakes
15% banana chips

"But Erasmus, your numbers amount to over 100 percent?!"

Yes, they do :)

Squid ...

Add in some craisins (cranberry raisins.) Gives it a great zip and a heck of a load of vitamin C.

Craisins...

Mmmmmmmm....sounds good! Thanks sgtmike88!

DanielL, good call on the Grapenuts! I don't know how I could've forgotten the Grapnuts. They are one of my favorite cereals!

I tried dehydrating some pineapple chunks yesterday and by this morning they were still very sticky. Do they stay that way or do I need to dry them a little longer?

BTW - they taste great but are a little chewy. I won't leave home without some dental floss.

Hey Guys....

A few months back after quitting smoking I started biking.. After spending a good amount of money on energy bars I decided to make my own...Well sort of..:)

They started out as power patties, and didn't turn out,, so I made them into power balls...

They are stupid easy to make, you can put Absolutely Anything into them and they are High Carb...

Here it goes...
You may have to adjust the amounts...

1 small container Karo syurp
1 cup peanut butter
raisins
sunflower seeds
Oatmeal
Pumpkin seeds
carob chips
coconut
soya milk powder
Anything else that doesn't move

What I did was put most of the sunflower and pumpkin seeds into a blender and made a flour out of it...

Dump it all together and knead with your hands into golf ball sized balls.

If you find them too wet, just knead in a little more oatmeal until they dry up a little..
The balls should hold their shape and not crumble..
The ground sunflower seeds act as a cement to hold it all together.

Once these are made you can freeze the majority of them,,the rest will sit for a very long time...

Have fun and try not to eat all of them the first day..

Normark...

sounds tasty! I'm going to have to try it at home.

I, too, always carry a few PowerBaars or Clif bars, but at a $1-2 a pop, they do seem pricey for what they are.
