I revamped mine yesterday and got rid of a few matches- added a small firesteel and a hacksaw blade knife (can be used for striking the steel or cutting- it's shaving sharp :))

kept some of the matches (seven to be exact), sealed striker and two firestraws (of course the compass is already part of the safe)

I'm going to configure the lanyard to hold more cordage, have't figured out exactly how yet though

I carry matches, with a cottonball to keep the matches from moving in any way.

Don't own one,I always figured with a bic and a ferrocerium rod I was covered. I have a pack or hurricane matches from decades ago, haven't toted any in a long while.Am I missing something?

I keep medication in one. No matches though.

if it only contains matches, probably not a ton (w/ a lighter and firesteel handy)- that was kind of my thought in re-vamping mine- I now have a small firesteel, in addition to the matches, tinder, small knife/striker and a compass- basically a small kit that is tethered to my person

Haven't had a match safe for years. Seriously considered getting a new one but the wait at the time and then the cost made me re-think it (for once:D) and I decided against the purchase. Match safes made more sense to me as match safes with strike any where's and before the days of Bic's and firesteels. Now anything waterproof from a zip lock baggie to a geocache capsule will get you by pretty well. Still one like that pictured is pretty nice, get a Bic in one and it would be perfect.

Guess it's liability and all but it sure seems like the "lifeboat" matches would make a lot more sense if they could be "strike anywhere" instead of needing to protect those abrasive strikers. Does anyone know if the lifeboat styled matches were ever sold or issued as "strike anywhere"?

Matches and a cotton ball in the top to stop them rubbing together !

Gave up on matches, as the strike anywhere ones available here suck big-time.
( for you who can remember, the old Eddy matches, blue with the fat heads were the bomb , Redbirds are crap.)
I use my matchsafes now for PJCB's and pills.

For now I have only matches in one...and no matches all all in the other. I had a green match safe I bought at an army store and the o-ring kept coming off so I quit even carrying a match safe for a long time. However lately I've gotten a Matchcap from EXOTAC and then a Silva match safe that looks a lot like the K&N and I am developing a whole new respect for match safes. I have REI matches only in the Matchcap but am playing with different things with the Silva. When I'm done with the Silva I'm going to put it in the kit that stays in the trunk of my wife's car. Thanks a lot for the ideas  The Silva looks a lot like your Suunto but it's silver.

I have a little Altoids style tin with water proof matches, a striker, a mini bic, a couple cotton ball fire starters, and a signalling mirror. It stays in my pocket at all times when I'm hiking.

I carry strike anywhere matches, a small firesteel, some lighter (also known as fatwood or kindling) and keep it all from rolling around with a couple of Tinder Quiks...the bottom surface of the cap is roughed up to work as a striker for most matches...at least it works for the strike anywheres...works fine for me...

Matches, PJCB, Match Striker, Ferro rod, needle & thread, 2 "trick" candles, button compass, unlubed condom for water, couple water treatment tablets. It's wrapped with a bit of gorilla tape and a ranger band holding a sharpened hacksaw blade. Keep that bugger in my pocket as back up, every day.

EDC some paracord on the key chain lanyard, multitool, folder, bic, maratac aaa light, and a thin bin liner in my wallet. also have a pill container with PJCB on the key chain & a few tiny ferro rods sprinkled about. Would feel pretty well equipped dropped off in my neck of the woods as is. Sometimes I just think that I'm just being paranoid.

Better to have and not need than need and not have?

sold by REI, but made by UCO- not sure if they are any cheaper under the UCO brand

read a match test several years ago, the UCO's were far and away the best matches tested
