What's lansky's finest hone.
I currently have the Diamond Professional set (has all their diamond hones).
I was wondering if they made anything finer than the fine diamond hone?
Also, grit size would be wonderful.

Based upon Lansky's own description (see below), I'm assuming it would be the 'Super Sapphire' hone:

From site: http://www.lanskysharpeners.com/parts_accessories.php

"Super Sapphire Polishing Hone
The ultimate accessory for your Lansky Sharpening System.
The new Super Sapphire Polishing Hone lets you achieve the ultimate, factory-style finish
on an already sharpened blade."

I haven't seen any description for grit size on the Lansky hones, but their part numbers might indicate it. The 'Super Sapphire' hone's part number is 'S2000' (maybe 2000 grit?). Their ultra-fine hone (white in yellow holder) is numbered as 'S1000' (maybe 1000 grit), and the part numbers go lower as the hone gets coarser. So, that might be indicative of the grit.

The sapphire hone is supposedly the finest, but I've had better luck with the "ultrafine" (yellow plastic/white ceramic). I don't even bother using the sapphire anymore.

I don't have the Sapphire hone (yet), but I've had pretty nice results so far with these 3 hones, in order:

1.) Medium Diamond (in orange holder) to produce the burr.
2.) Standard Fine (purple hone in blue holder; begin to see mirrored finish with this one)
3.) Standard Ultra-fine (white ceramic in the yellow holder; even more shiny & reflective finish)

I do my final touch-up with stropping on a strop block.

I've been using only water to lubricate the hones, as it cleans up easier this way. But, others here on the Forums have suggested using soapy water (with dish soap) to keep the hones wet. It's also been suggested that this method, combined with a very light touch, will result in an even finer polish with the finishing stones. Sounds like a good idea, as my water-only approach requires more frequent re-wetting as the water drips away & dries off.
