What's my issue with folders?

For the last several days I've been unsuccessfully trying to find a new EDC folder. I have looked at nearly every Spyderco, Benchmade, Kershaw and even considered a few different Strider and CRK models. Nothing. I just can’t find something that really interests me enough to press that little "Add to Cart" button.

I could name dozens of fixed blades I want but can't come up with a single folder. WTF?

I guess I'll just keep looking.

Maybe you just have to get adjusted to seeing them. Technically speaking, folders are inferior in every way but ease of carry (all things being equal), so it might be mere knowledge of that fact.

Give that one a spin.

The difference between "looking at" and "handling and using" is extremely vast. You need to get your hands on something that turns your head even slightly and then see how your interest progresses.

Have you looked at Darrel Ralph, Todd Begg, Kirby Lambert, Brian Tighe Coon, or Randy Doucette? Just naming a few makers.

Go custom. Get in touch with Andrew Demko. Well worth the wait. I waited 4 months for my Navajah and I'd have gladly waited twice that.

I'll second or third going custom, if you have the money to support that. Find a maker that even vaguely interests you and get in touch with them. Maybe if you work out something that's in some way your own design, it'll grab your interest better.

You don't need to be interested in it, as long as you know it's necessary. Just get something cheap from any of the 3 companies that's legal in your area and start carrying. When you have something in your hand and know exactly what you like (and don't like) about it, then you find something else.

I'll take a look at some customs. I've been carrying Spyderco for the last couple years and I've handled my share of Benchmades and Kershaws. I'm just more of a fixed blade guy.

Seems like you already have some folders, yet can't find another folder that interests you because your main interest is fixed blades.

My two cents, keep the EDC folders that you have, and get another fixed blade :D

Yes! Maybe I'll justify another smaller fixed blade by telling myself it could be used for EDC, haha. I've been eyeing a few smaller BRKTs and the BHK Nessy Necker.

On a side note, that Tighe Coon (:D) looks pretty cool.

I know! And now so does harkamus!

JMAN,

I've had a lot of folders, mostly customs. At work I carry a solid fixed and alox SAK. I like the toughness of the fixed and the utility of the SAK.

And it's not his name, it's the name of a knife he makes.

I've known too. I subconsciously wrote the name of the knife when I posted, because for a very long time, the Tighe Coon was my favorite folder. I just never bothered editing my post.

It's a beautiful knife.

Perhaps take a look at something a little more old school. A traditional folder like Case, Queen, Schatt and Morgan etc.

I ran into a similar issue. Modern folders are fine. Many of them well made. But I've yet to find one that clicks with me. Too many stainless blades and black plastic handles....after a while they all more or less look the same..generic and utilitarian....performance will of course vary though. Modern folders just aren't my thing despite my best efforts. I want to like them...I just don't.

Overall I'm more of a small fixed blade fan for EDC. I carry small fixed blade daily from ESEE, but I've got a more traditional folder now for the light work as a compliment to the fixed blade. A folder comes in handy. My Case mini copperlock does great work for the small jobs.

Just my 2 cents anyway.
