Question...the rule states...

Accordingly, registered and basic members may not start or post in threads with such requests whether with the intent to sell or for informational purposes only. This rule applies throughout the site.

Does that mean:

1) Registered and basic members may not start a thread that requests an evaluation, and also may not make a post which requests an evaluation in another person's thread ; or does that mean

2) A registered and basic member may not post in a thread where a request for an evaluation has been made?

Or both?

Based on years of explanations, I suspect it will turn out that Registered and Basic members may not ask for or about the value of any object on Bladeforums.

That is the way I read it, and they they CAN participate in threads where a "eligible" member asks for a valuation.

That is, its not "may not post in threads containing such requests" and it is "may not post in a thread and make such requests"

Right I read that rule as joe gold coming on and saying "what's my first run signed by Babe Ruth Strider worth" and Jimmy blue chiming in with "I got some bad news for you" otherwise there would be a rigidly moderated Valuations sub forum that was the only place golds and up would talk turkey. Blues etc. wouldn't even see it just like the other restricted sub forums.

Yeah...that is what I thought, but the subject came up in an actual "What's My Knife Worth" thread, in which I commented. A fellow member pointed out that members of my level are not allowed to comment in those threads, and the rule was cited, and I can see reading the rule in that way.

Was just hoping for an official ruling.

Yes, well stated. Kevin has final say as always, but this is how I read and interpret the rule.

But Registered and Basic members may participate in a thread where a Gold member has asked about the value of his or her knife, correct?

We can answer but not ask, yes? That was always my assumption.

That's not the way I take it. If you want to partake in a "value" discussion whether it be asking, answering, whatever, you need a Gold Membership or higher.

I can fully understand that "read." That's why I'm trying to get clarification on who may participate in those threads.

We all know who can start them....I cant quite figure out who can participate.

I take the "...with such requests" part of the rule to mean that non-eligible members can not make a request about value, I don't see it as precluding their participation in a thread started by an eligible member, ergo stating their view of the value of an item. Stating a value is not "making a request". This would then be consistent with the application of the rule which sees "non- eligible members" being allowed to buy as much as they want in the Exchange, just not list it for sale. YMMV

If they are giving a gold member an answer, I don't see an issue. If they are giving another registered user an answer that is a problem. It's circumventing a direct request from the site owner. To be honest, I go on a case by case basis. since no two threads are alike.

Thanks! Of course giving a registered user an answer is right out, regardless of who gives it. I should have been clearer! But I thought that went without saying.
