I bought the 11 and 16 and am really enjoying them:). The next thing i would like to buy is a bigger chopping knife. I'm looking at the 4,7, and 9. I'm not sure of those three what i want. I really like the look of the 4 but am not sure how it does with anything other than chopping. The other thing i'm considering is the difference between the 7 and 9. How much of a difference does the extra 2 inches in the blades make? Any help would be appreciated in making a decision. Sorry if this has been posted before just wanted some opinions, Thanks

Having two extra inches can come in very handy depending on the position you're in.

haha i suppose it never hurts to have more length. I guess what im really asking though is once your getting out to a knife as big as a 9 or 4, if i didn't have a smaller knife with me would it be more beneficial to have a straight bladed knife vs the 4?

In all honesty tho, my choice would be the 9. The 11 and 16 will cover probably 95% of all your cutting needs. Chopping would be your only weakness, and the 9 excels in that area.

You need a BK9. You can't not have a 9.

OK thanks for the reply guys and a very strong argument made bigghoss... the only question i have left is, just so i understand the design of the 4 isn't any better of a chopper than the 9?

The 4 is an awesome chopper. About the same between the 4 and 9. But with the 4 you save on weight since its lighter.

Hoss, do you even know who's picture that IS or do you just keep posting it cause it's pretty? Also have you seen the others in the series, more than just that one was taken.

The 4 is a pretty dedicated chopper. It's really good at it, once you find the sweet spot. With the 9 it's more of an all around knife, but since you already have other "all arounders" you may not need as much of one.

Haha. I don't even think Hoss knows there is a girl in that pic. Just a Bk-9. I think we all know how he feels about the 9! Lol. :) Can't not have a 9.
I love it.

Alright that sounds good thanks for answering my questions guys really appreciate it as i'm learning. I'm still going to think about it some more but i think i might go with the 9. It seems everyone around here thinks its one of the first Beckers to get and probably will suit me the best for a big chopper.

This. When I got the 4, I was surprised at how much smaller it was than the 9. It's definitely lighter. The 4 is my go-to woods knife, it chops about the same as the 9 (when you find the sweet spot on the recurve blade and master the snap cut technique), and it is a bit more nimble for up close carving -- though admittedly you will likely use your 16 for much of that. I like how the 4 fits in the hand.....

That said the 9 is probably more versatile overall, and if you need a big knife, it's definitely bigger.

That's a very strong argument CB. Heres my reasoning for choosing the 9 over the 4 though, I like for every piece of my kit to have more than one use. Now granted, the 4 could carve, if needed, or it could make feather sticks, if called upon, but the 9 can do it just a wee bit better. The differance in chopping is very small, so the 9 gets my nod.
Oh yeah, and a quick pic for bighoss lol...

I'm deffinately not calling you out though CB. I consider your wisdom among the highest of those we frequently patronize with :D

I only regurgitate what I've learned from here. I've learned from Moose, Ethan, Biscuit, Derek, Pointy, 1066Vik, AIG... I go to the gatherings that I can and hear it from the horse's mouth so to speak.

I actually don't have a 4. I do have a 9, and a 7. I got the 7 before the 9 and I realized when I wanted a big blade, I wanted more blade usually than a 7 allotted me. So when I need to do chopping, I will use either my 9 or my TMHawk. The TMHawk actually works best IMO for chopping. I broke down a bit of fire wood at the parent's house using it the other weekend.

You've got an 11 & 16 , IMO the 9 will complete your setup - I have the 9/11 and am waiting to get the 16

9 is the king after all.

My vote is the 9. Apart from (IMO) looking cooler, its easier to sharpen and I find it a much better chopper over the 4. The 7 is a solid knife and bridges the gap between the smaller BKs and the choppers nicely but if I need a proper chopper its the 9.
