Usually dont make these kinda posts but Im bored
Lisa's been busy with regular blacksmith stuff lately (strikers, trammels, hooks and the like) so the hawk output has been slow..Ive put the idea in her head about making up some hatchets..
So heres what we came up with so far..
The body is 1045 so the poll can be heat treated like a regular hammer.
For the cutting bit the blade end was upset and split. Then a wedge of 5160 was forge welded in. I think hatchets should be have good edge retention. We use hatchets a lot to butcher with and dull hatchets dont butcher well.
Well anyway this is the heads with the 5160 bit already welded in.. Marked and ready to be split, drifted and forged(had to make new drifts)...Im looking forward to what Lisa does with those beautiful curly maple boards.
