I'm very stoked to get my first Fletcher knife... should be here tomorrow!

I like that you (and Andy) leave the heat treat scales on the un-ground portion of the blade. I like the look of it, but I wanted to know (for when people ask me) what are "heat treat scales" and why do you and Andy leave them that way?

What that basically is, if I'm correct, is a layer of rough carbide structure from the decarburization during the heat treating process. When you heat steel up to those temperatures, you get carbon escaping in the form the scale. It's left on because it's very resistant to just about everything to a degree and it displays the technique and precision of the grind. If your grinds are very clean, it's clear to see in the line where the scale is left, if not, better get hand-sanding. ;)

I don't think that I'll be doing WIP pictures quite as often this time around.

Sorry man,I should have quoted Joe it was meant for him. I didn't think you could really keep this up every time. Although it would be cool.

Here's a tease... ;)

THose knives came out great Dylan.

We leave the black on because it protects from rust. It also highlights the fact that we are accomplishing a convex sabergrind. There is no tougher grind to get right. If you want a full height convexed blade with a divot in the spine opposite the plungeline, then those are available. When Dylan says 'get to hand sanding', he means that often hand rubbing can hide that particular mistake in the grind. We leave the scale on there to highlight the accomplishment. Also, IMO, its quite beautiful and each blade develops a pattern that is unique, and acquired naturally.

Its also conveniently cost saving for both ourselves, and you guys. If we had to hand rub our knives, the price would go up by $100 immediately. This is a win win for everyone.

Thanks Andy. :)

Believe me, I love the look of it, it's one of the features that drew me to you and Dylan, I just wanted to be able to tell other admirers the reason and purpose.

I thought it was just some magical coating Dylan and Andy came up with. J/k it really gives the knives a great appearance if you ask me. I like it.
