Is it meant to be carried instead of a hatchet to save weight? All I have read is people using it for wood chopping ,or is it made to be a slighty smaller matcheteor both? If anything I might get one because it looks cool but was wondering what it is meant for. It wouldnt to be meant your only camping knife is it, I would think you would still want a 4-7 inch knife on your hip too?

Many people like a big knife out in the woods for it's versatility, you can slice, chop, pry, drive it with a batton to fell trees or split wood, etc. etc. Most people would also carry a smaller blade, maybe a SAK or mora knife or whatever,I find a hatchet works better in big wood but I don't often need to work big wood on say a backpacking trip so I carry a big knife instead, more useful.if I were to carry one knife it just might be a BK9,I'll let you know when the UPS guy shows up with mine!I REALLY like the design.I have little use for a midsized fixed blade personally,I prefer a little/big combo.

Another part of the picture is the blade length issue. the C/U 7 is seven inches because that is the lengh of blade commonly accepted in the military (Look at the "kabar" or marine combat model, it is that lenght, I believe.) The 9 incher< isuspect, is partly marleted towards those combat individuals who aren't restricted by the 7 inch limit. If the crap hit the whirling thing, then the extra 2 inches could make all the difference. Also, a 9 incher would make a better hacking tool, a better inprovised shovel, a better improvised hammer, etc. Good combat tool, if one is allowed to carry it.

If I had one for camping and such, I would take along a smaller folder. Folder for fine work, Becker 9 incher for chopping, camp site making, whacking sandwiches in two, etc.

Well I just saw online that my BK7 was just delivered to my house so I cant wait to check it out . I think I will instantly start saving for the BK9 just so when I go hunting/camping with my friends I can like Crayola said use the Bk9 as a sandwhich slicer. That would be cool.
