What's the advantage of the Piano Lock-TM over the older lock style?

Just wondering what the advantage of the Piano Lock-TM on the newest, larger SOG multi-tools is over the former, one-piece lock?

Not to be a naysayer, it just seems like more parts, which essentially made a relatively simple and effective design more complicated. Just wondering.

PS I'm a closet Paratool fan. :)

I wonder about that too because I'm looking forward to take a very close look at the PowerAssist. What difference does it make, if any?

Thank you.
Tom

One advantage of the PianoLock over the previous lock is that each component has it's own lockbar. What an happen although very rarely is that one of the smaller components, like the bottle opener, can get pushed in the handle too far and prevent an open component from locking in the open position. With each component have a lockbar the other components are not effected by the position of one tool.

Hope this helps and doesn't confuse you any more.

Thanks, Chris. That makes sense to me. I don't own one, so I've not seen it happen, but understand how it could.

one thing i worry about though, is that with a smaller backspring there is less pressure holding the spring down, making it more likely for the lock to fail. any thoughts?

Is there any chance one day the locks could give a little resistance to opening so that it functions like a swiss army lock and prevents clumping? That'd be pretty neat, especially if the tools were on the outside.

Either way, I'm hoping for a PowerAssist in my stockings.

I've had that happen with my powerlock as well. Only with the bottle opener. I wonder why the bottle opener just couldnt be modified to not be pushed down too far like the other tools and leave the lock the same. It does work very well.
