What's the attraction of Moleskine Notebooks?

I've seen these mentioned here from timr to time and have looked at a few sites that had them for sale. While they look nice enough, I don't see anything that special about them. And it seems like they sell for several times the price of comperable notebooks - so, what exactly is the attraction? Am I missing something?

The paper quality, especially in the sketchbook, is quite high. May not matter to you, but it is a definite improvement over regular paper if you are writing with a fountain pen.

I think they are just a good quality notebook. I have seen similar journals for more money that were lower quality.

The elastic band is nice since it works flawlessly and doesn't add any weight like some clasps.

As for the larger Moleskines, I don't have any experience with them.

Thanks, Clay. Actually, I did get to see several in a shop here since I posted this question. Still failed to see the great attraction - but then, I don't use a fountain pen. Paper seems quite good and rubber band's a nice touch. At the prices they were asking ($12 for the small one) will make due w/o and save a few bucks.

Do you have a Barnes&Noble near you, Maury?? Thats where I picked mine up at(about $10.00). CD is right, just a well made pocket notebook. A little touch of class you can carry around with ya. I had to rearrange some knives to make room, but it was worth it.

The Museum Store usually wants $12, but what isn't overpriced in there? B&N usually has them for $10.

Maury, what ones are you using instead? A bound journal or a spiral notebook? What do you put down in it usually?

Usually carry a small (3.5"x6.5") looseleaf note book. Not quite pocket sized, but carryable. Has the advantage of laying flat when opened, inexpensive and refill paper is available at any stationary store.

I am a professional photographer and do a fair amount of travel so have gotten into the habit of saving pages from each trip, as a record of expenses (for the tax man), hotel and restaurant notes, client notes, new friends, etc. When traveling overseas I add copies of passport, driver's license, eyeglass perscription, customs registrations of camera equipment and currency conversion tables.

Local B&N was out, but they did tell me that they stock only the small lined Moleskine book for $10.00. Was $12 at local art supply shop, and they had several differant styles.

Thanks for info, but will probably stick with my looseleaf book.

I like the moleskine because it fits unobtrusively in my cargo pockets. Today I am wearing an older pair of dockers type pants, that do have large pockets, but it is in my front left pocket and I don't even notice it.

I just got hooked on the moleskine notebooks. Don't leave home without it now. I used to use a Grad or a Mead. Of course, my wife thinks it's a huge waste to spend $10 instead of $3 but she's kind of happy because I gave her 2 Meads.

After reading this thread and similar ones, I picked up a Moleskine notebook about 4 days ago. So far, so good. I actually bought two notebooks, one that was a bit larger with a very nice blue leather cover with a crest on it, and nicer paper. I am using this one for a journal right now and leaving it at home, while I take the moleskine out with me everywhere in case I think of something to write down that just can't wait. I especially like the inside pocket on the moleskine. It makes for a cool gadget factor.
