Hi , What's the best deal for a new 9 inch disc grinder? Now for a reversible model... same question. Do I need one if I have a good belt grinder with a platen? Some advice please. Thanks, Larry in Bakersfield

The cheapest route is to build your own, I did. I copied the Beaumont grinder. I have a KBAC-27 controller for variable speed and reverse. The motor is a Leeson 1hp 3 phase and a 9" steel disc from KNG. If you don't feel like building KNG carries them.

Thanks Mike for pointing me in a direction I can research. Is a 1 hp optimal for you?...OR would you get a bigger motor next time? Thanks, Larry

There are many who create super grinds with just a good disc. I will mention that this ids one that should have a slight bevel on it. The failings are no contour grinding blades and no hollow grinds. I think a good belt grinder should be first and then possibly the disc. Frank

Used a disc exclusively for almost 20 years. I was able to do hollow grind and contouring but it was a real pain. Flat and convex are the strong grinds for a disc. If you have a very limited budget and are tight on space the disc is the way to go. This disc system is very versatile http://www.caffreyknives.net/RodsDisc.html. Just add a motor and VFD and you will be grinding in no time and for well under $1K. I went from a 1/2hp 110vac to a 1hp dc then to a 1.5hp 3ph. I now have 2 a 1hp 3ph 1750 rpm and a 1.5hp 3ph 3600rpm. Both are on a VFD and work great. I like the 3600rpm when I am really hogging. I have gotten used to the speed and only use the full rpm when I am really roughing. Biggest benefit to a disc is the flat surfaces possible. It is very difficult on a belt. I do have a belt now and use it for my initial grinding but finish on the disc. If you have the funds and space I do agree a belt can be better. if you are like I was and had no $$ or space then go for the disc. A lot can be accomplished on one.

Larry,

I feel the 1 hp 3ph is perfect. My VFD is usually set at about 50%. I use my belt for hogging and the disc for finishing and straightening things out.
