Someone once told me that the Bedouins got it right. They cover themselves with big, loose clothings. Practically all wrapped up except for the eyes.

Apparently, the loose clothing allows for proper ventilation and reduces rapid dehydration due to the enormous heat.

How about for modern day travellers whether one is in a four-wheeler or on a camel?

What are the most comfortable and most practical form of clothing for a long journey across the desert?

Day time: loose light color ,long sleeves/leg's, big brim hat.Night think warm:)

Don't forget Shemaghs (arab scarves) very useful bit of kit to have in the sandbox. Cheers! Pipey

The new desert camo fatigues get my vote. Lightweight cotton with long sleeves and lots of pockets. Looks better than sheets!

The desert is where I do most of my extended camping / hiking. I wear white long sleeve shirts that are a cotton/synthetic blend (castaways from my Sunday-go-to-meeting wardrobe). For pants I wear full-length, loose cottons that are not too dark (again, castaways). When it gets chilly I put a white T-shirt on under my long sleeve. Always a hat, and often a bandana. The bandana can be used over your mouth when the wind kicks up a dust storm, or it can be worn over your neck to add sun protection. When I forget to take a bandana I pull up the collar on the shirt to protect me from the sun.

It seems like long sleeves and pants would make you hotter, but they don't. At least not if they are loose and made of the right materials.
