I have (or have had) a number of those mentioned so far.

Here's my choice:

Knife by Phillip Patton.

Haha ...don't know if it qualifies as "bang for buck" but I'll take one of those damascus Patton bowies like pictured above!! ^ :D -that thing is BEAUTIFUL!!!

Seriously though, you make no mention of what your price limit, size prefference, or intended use is, ....but "bang for buck" I'll throw this one in...

Ontario Raider Bowie. I think they can be had for around $50 to $60 or so.

This is from Himalayan Imports web site:

Here%20is%20our%20basic%20steel%20--%20springs%20from%20a%20Mercedes%20heavy%20truck%20or%20bus.%20It%20will%20be%20heated%20and%20cut%20into%20appropriately%20sized%20billets%20for%20various%20khukuris.jpg

Here is our basic steel -- springs from a Mercedes heavy truck or bus. It will be heated and cut into appropriately sized billets for various khukuris. . . .

When we run low on springs some kami will hop a bus to India -- always the cheapest bus which is full of chickens, goats, pigs, people, merchandise and about everything else imaginable. They have their favorite junk yards they visit and will pick up old junk leaf springs.

First choice -- Mercedes Benz
Second choice (almost never available) --Saab
Third choice -- Japanese cars

Why not? It only cost 3x what the popular "Scrapyard" knife does, and it's a way better blade.

Bang for the buck = value. Not cheap.

Personally? Production knives? At 50-60 the Ontario Marine Raider is a steal. The edge it comes with is crap -- but, send it out to someone for a really good professional sharpening and you'll have something that's really pretty special.

I'd shamelessly plug for a local company if you want a recommendation -- the American Grinding Company of Brooklyn MD does a lot of precision grinding work for me and it's really very nice work for the price. Call them on the phone. They'll work something out with you.

+ for the SY regulator, good style, comfortable handle material, and some REALLY good steel. Very hard to beat for $100
