What's the best defensive 4 / 5in folder

You are going to get about a zillion "best knives" ideas, but I'll start out with suggesting the Spyderco Millitary, or the Spyderco Police model. If you want to go up to a 6 inch blade, the Cold Steel Vaquero Grande is a good one.:).

In that size range the pickin's get pretty thin. Cold Steel
or Camillus maxx.

Of the two makers I'd pick the maxx as it has all the stuff
to make it a folding striaght blade;) Not to mention it is
one hell of a bargain for the dollar spent:D :D

If it's purely for defence, I'd go for a Civvie. It requires next to no training or martial blade skills, and is so instinctive to use. Just slash and run.
If you're going to train though, the choices are endless, but I'd personally go for a MBC Spyderco or a waved Emmerson to assist with speed of deployment.

I like the texture on the scales of the Emerson Commander better than the scales on the Benchmade AFCK. They feel more "grippy" to me. Also I think the handle shape of the Commander is more ergonomic. It just seems to fit my hand, much better than the AFCK.

If you don't go through some serious training, a bunch of quaters in a sock will be your best defensive folder ;) .

Other than that, if looks and functionality are concerned, I agree with all the posts above.

I'd have to go with a Crawford Perfigo. That thing is awesome. But I'm just going by looks and word of mouth. Plus it's a little expensive maybe. But that would probably be my choice right now. If you ask me next week I'm sure I'll say something else.

I carry a SOG Pentagon II. It is giant. It has an arc lock which is both strong and allows the knife fly open fast as an automatic. The blade is thick and has a shark tooth tip which is great for penetration. This knife is as good a it gets. Twice as stout as any spyderco

Awww thanks a bunch Poboy, for making my wish list even longer. Yet again someone has mentioned a knife that I had never heard of, and now I want one. I hate these forums.

IMO, the BEnchmade Axis AFCK puts it all together in a defensive knife like no other knife does (and I include customs in that).

It's got a sharp point for piercing. It's mated with the handle with a bit of a forward rake for extra slashing power. The steel is D-2, tougher than the stainless steels found in most of its competitors at this point in time, and that supports the sharp point and high-performance edge geometry better. Blade hole works better than studs and disks (for me) for fast and secure opening. The handle is strong, secure, and comfortable. The lock is incredible, as strong as anything out there, and much more reliable than the standard liner-lock faire. Overall production quality has been outstanding on this knife.

There are knives which might beat the Axis AFCK for some characteristic or another, but I believe there are no production knives that come all that close to putting it all together like the Axis AFCK does.

Yeah I agree with Joe.., the AFCK is head and shoulders above other Productions models for all the reasons he stated...

The liner lock version still beats most.., but with the Axis lock and D2.., no contest at the price point....

LOL, sometimes I "hate" these forums too ;)

Not that I want to rub it in, but here's a comparo pic with my DDR Bullnose Talonite and a Devilliers Operator.

The Perfigo is designed to be used as a impact weapon when closed and it can be carried either by a (removable) belt clip or the belt-frog...I think the intended use of the blade is obvious :)

BTW, if the recurved Perfigo is not your thing, try the Crawford Perseco

What's the knife in the center? Where can I get one? Thanks in advance.

...but feel the lock needs some re-designing. When I really gripped mine tightly, pressure was put on the lock and I could feel blade wobble when slashing. Otherwise, in my opinion, it is the perfect defensive folder. Lightweight, fast, and it has several carry options straight outta the box.

You can see more pics here: (shameless plug)

Thanks. My next question would have been, "Is it available with a regular steel blade?"

...Just checked the website. That knife is way out of my price range. :(
