Hehehe. Ok, I already posted this on the spyderco forum, but I thought I would share it here too. It doesn't have much to do with general knife discussion but it was a neat experience andinwanted to share it. I did have my pacific salt on me. What do you guys think? Could I fought this guy off with my folder?? ;). I think maybe I could take him with my dragonfly...you know, if it was really sharp. I looked em up saw that they only weigh 80,000 pounds. :)

So, I went out this morning on my kayak and the fish were biting again. Even better, they were hitting top water lures which is always fun. Anyway, I saw a couple of humpbacks early about 200 yards away. That's a relatively common occurrence here so I didn't pay much attention. Well, about an hour later, two of them came up right next to me and just sat there on the surface. I paddled my kayak within 10 feet of them and they pretty much ignored me. After about 10 minutes, I finally worked up the courage to jump in. Man, I should have brought a mask!! I could see outlines, but the water wasnt crystal clear so I couldn't see that much underwater. It was a really cool experience. I've seen them fishing and surfing tons of times, but NEVER this close! Here's some video I took after I swam with them. Enjoy.

Don't you mean what knife will make the best toothpick for a whale? As I know no sane (or insane) person would try to take a whale on with a folding knife.

Gave me the shivers and I'm in North Carolina.

Good for you and thanks for posting.

someone must have had a whale of a time!
i'm not too sure about a folder though...

I don't think any folding knives would have much of an effect on a whale. Nevertheless, I would look for something with a secure grip, strong lock and long and pointy blade. Espada Extra Large perhaps?

I think you should seriously consider a fixed blade.

A new model, a folding Cot. Blade steel is Mattress-1234, aluminum frame lock. Its even rust proof AND fire retardant. Best deployed in the Appalachian mountains. Guaranteed survival.
