I Know, I know, this topic has been done to death. What makes it worse is I'm a newbie of course :( Oh Well.

I have a craftsmen 2x42 belt grinder, and I wanted to know what the best type of belt would be for it? I'm refering to aluminum oxide/zirconium (SP?)/ceramic...

I know not to buy them at sears, since those aren't as good quality, I just am lost when it comes to what belt to buy. I'm mostly working with ATS 34 and D2. Both annealed.

Also what are J flex belts and others? what is the difference between these and a standard aluminum oxide??

Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

You can contact these guys: http://www.supergrit.com/

They probably have the largest selection of 2x42 belts you'll find.

The ceramic belts up to 80-120 give you the most bang for the $$. I have a ceramic 36 grit on my craftsmen. I use it for shaping and cutting the first bevel on the blade. It doesn't wear out.

After that I'd just get AO belts. Cheap. SC cuts faster so, but don't cut for long. Might as well get the cheaper ones.

Hope that helps!

As Sando stated in his post, I get mine from Super Grit also. I like the Norton belts. I get the zirc and AO. I'm going to get ceramic for D2 as it wears out the zirc belts fast. The AO are inexpensive but don't last very long.
