My buddies birthday is next month and sence we both collect knives I was planning on buying him a knife for his birthday. We are both into buck knives but although they aren't very expensive I won't have the extra money to buy him one. I was planning on getting him a nice little Victorinox Swiss Army knife you can get at walmart for around 21 bucks would this be a good present?

I am sure that whatever knife you choose to get him, he will apprceiate it. A Swiss Army knife makes a GREAT present!

If he does not have one already, its a great present

He has a swiss army knife but its a crappy one he got at a flea market for a dollar, he doesnt use it at all and I'm pretty sure it doesn't hold an edge well which isn't a huge deal for him he sharpens his knives constantly. But I know victorinox is a good knife brand and I figure if I can get him a knife he will like and EDC for a little while then its worth it. I would love to get him a buck 110 but I really don't have the extra money with stuff I still wanna get and sence I can only get 10 dollars a week it doesn't leave much room for extra stuff.

I think SAKs are some of the best gift knives. There useful, inexpensive, and have such a variety that your bound to find at least one that appeals to someone.

You mentioned Wallmart but you might want to take a peek at Target too if there is one near you. They have a few to choose from as well.

Any Vic SAK is a great gift. I have a Cadet and often carry it more than my regular folders because of it's small size and versatility.

any ALOX SAK, and dont forget to tape a penny to it! :D

I wouldn't do it. Giving someone a knife is really bad luck. That's the reason for taping a penny to it -- so they can "buy" the knife from you.

My girlfriend got me a beautiful knife, but I refused it which wasn't easy to do. She was offended, but when some of her family members reinforced my superstition she was okay.

Why not give your friend a gun. No bad luck associated with that. :D

Damn, I thought that knife superstition was relegated to Europe (my Greek father feels the same as you do). How does a gun fit the bill though?

A SAK is ALWAYS a great gift!!! If there is ANY way you could find an alox (alumin handled) version... there ain't a knife knut in the world who would not EDC that! The only chain that I know of that carries them is Target... and I'm pretty sure the one I saw there was the "Cadet" for $18... a STEAL!

one of the most useful "knives" i own is an rei multi tool thing with nail clippers.

i think it was around $12, and is basically like a small sak with a nail clipper.

if you like i can post a pic tomorrow.

how about an opinel? inexpensive but not cheap. only downside is you can't get it at walmart

There are a few places that will engrave the knife withi his initials for a small fee. If I recall, there are a few Ebay Sellers who do it for $3.
