I happen to like finishing my knives by hand I start at 220grit and go from there and I was wondering what are some off the best sander paper for sanding knives (I don't care what the paper cost)
any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

Yeah, Rhynowet Redline aluminum oxide sandpaper. Supergrit.com is a good supplier. I just spent about $140 there, I re-up about once a year with them. I get 220,400,600,1000 in 50 sheet packs and 1500 and 2000, 10 sheets each as a basic order.

I hand sand with plain water, works good for me. I use it on everything, wood, metal, phenolic etc.

I know you're talking steel, but for handle materials try 3M Sandblaster Pro. The stuff is light years beyond the old garnite stuff. Synthetic abrasive doesn't seem to load much at all and the tacky backing is sweet.

Lowes carries it (my preferred place to buy it) as do a lot of other retailers online and in brick and mortars.

I use Klingspor wet/dry silicon carbide papers in grits from 100-1000 and like it very much. It's available in 1500 and 2000 as well but I haven't tried those yet; I still have some Norton Black Ice in those grits to use up.

I keep hearing about Rhyno-Wet, but Pops Knife Supply has the Klingspor stuff and I order belts and bolts from him all the time, so I've been sticking with that.

3M also makes polishing papers all the way down to 2 micron - approx 6000 grit.

I've tried lots, and like most here I have a selection of Rhynowet Redline in 280, 400, 800 and 1200 grit. I also use Norton Black Ice for 2000 grit. Below 280 grit I'll use anything I can find cheap, but tend to use Harbor Freights 2" cloth rolls (120, 180 and 240 grit) mainly because it's precut to a size that fits my hand sanding "stick" (which is actually made of mild steel). Below 280 grit I don't care so much about quality because any sanding lines introduced at that level are removed at higher grits. That said, I will admit the HF price for those rolls isn't exactly cheap when you compare to Supergrit pricing, which is why yesterday I ordered a 50 yard roll of the 320X grit 2.5" cloth from Supergrit on closeout at $25. That ought to last me a while.

The Rhynowet Red is hard to beat. It resists loading and seems to be fairly durable.

For scales, you simply can't beat Klingspor Gold. I've got 1" and 2" shop rolls in a full range of grits. The stuff doesn't load, remains aggressive after long sanding sessions, and has a very nice flexible cloth backing. It comes in rolls, belts, disks, and sheets.

Thanks guys! I'm going to have to try that rhynowet paper(I have tried it before). I'll also look up the supergrit place.
Thanks guys!
On the subject of hand sanding do any of you have a favorite sanding block design or method of sanding?

If you haven't already, search out Nick Wheeler's hand sanding video. It is a really good tutorial by one of the best. It also shows his sanding blocks.

Good luck,
Chris

I am using the rhynowet as well. One thing I noticed is that it cuts so aggressively, its like using one lower grit paper from other brands. This resulted in me finishing one grit higher with rhynowet than the 3M or Norton papers.

I've been working on a "Hand Sanding 102"... just haven't had the time for finishing it to be a top priority over other things.

James- Klingspor makes a lot of good products, but I think the Rhynowet is head and shoulders above the Klingspor sheets.

I had been using the supergrit psa rolls Nick spoke of in his video and agree they work very well. I also like the Mirka gold he suggested and actually ordered it to try after seeing his video
