At the moment I place the sword on the back of my couch and start with a Spyderco White stick to give the edge a bit of work.

I then use my Spyderco Ultra Fine Benchstone to finish off.

I hold the Katana and use the stones in a circular back and forth motion. I keep the edge away from myself and use the stone in my primary hand (right).

I was a little careless at first though and now my Katana has some marks from the stones (several 4-5 inch slight scratches running up the blade)

DOH:(

I simply did not realise how BIG this puppy is, until it came to give the edge a little work.

Sharpening swords differes from sharpening knives in that you move the stone and immobilize the sword.

There is also the issue fo blade edge geometry to consider, and many articles are written in the forums pertaing to this. There's flat grind, chisel grind, sabre grind, convex grind...

You get the picture.
