Whats the best priced "custom" 110's that are commonly available? By custom I mean anything other than the standard Wal-mart model with the 420 blade, brass bolsters and dark brown scales. I know some of these are not technically "Customs" but I ask this for the guys who are just starting to collect Buck's or 110's and can start building out there collection with $50-$80 knives before they get to the $250-$600 ones. If you post please include where you got it from, not just the model. Please no build-outs from 5 years ago or Clearances on discontinued models (if they aren't available anymore) they don't help us.

Thanks

You can go onto the Buck website and build your own and it tells you the cost. I think one can be built up for around 90$. DM

Hi Call_to_arms,

There are still many deals to be found on the auction sites and by looking at other areas like flea markets, yard sale, estate sales, and pawn shops. Just take your time and don't be in a rush.

My last one from a month ago is sporting beautiful Heritage Walnut with Nickle silver rivets and bolsters with an S30V blade. It was around $90 shipped and took about 5 weeks from ordering to delivery. It's really well built and smooth!

The 1st Custom,(other than standard)110 I scored was the Alaskan Guide from Cabelas. That's in the price range you're looking for and IMHO one heck of a knife for the money!

I think it will depend on what you consider a "custom". Given your stated price range, anything from Bucks Custom Shop is out unless you stay with the 420HC standard blade and the most inexpensive handle material.

Another option (I'm not recommending them though :barf: ) is a large number sold on the famous auction sites, that have had the handles changed out to various colors and patterns of Corelon. Some of them fall into the $50-$80 range, but also keep in mind that they no longer have the Buck warranty.

If I were you, I'd start with those up to $150 or so. You may not get to accumulate as many but they will more likely be real collectables, not just a bunch of brightly colored stuff with phoney "Limited Edition, 1 of 400" claims.

What David and Skyhorse said. I just took delivery a couple of weeks ago of a Custom Shoppe S30V / Oak version, which was $86 and well worth the price.

Don't forget to check out the Web Specials page at the Buck website. Many of their offerings are very reasonable in price and are very limited in number, not to mention that they are often made from parts left over from special projects and often have blades with "designer's choice" or "custom" stamped on the tang. They frequently have very nice and unusual scale material. That's where I'd start if I were starting out. That's where a lot of us on this forum continue looking periodically because they do have some great and unusual deals there. Just be patient and keep looking. They do show up there. You are buying from Buck so the warranty is there and the quality is there, as opposed to the "after market" conversions which is a mixed bag sometimes good, sometimes great, but sometimes not-so-good and not-so -great, depending on who you are buying from. That takes time to learn.

The knives I was thinking of were the Cabelas Alaskan Hunter, the Bass pro model with the fancy steel (I cant remember which it is right now), and the model smokeys has with nickel bolsters and the buck crest in the handle, stuff that's regularly available. Is there any similar models/ sources a guy should be watching for?

wow that got long so in front now i will say
it does not mater what others call a custom
if he wants to collect i dont blame him on wanting non wally made knives
so to contune .....

as a pres once said "it depends on what you call ..."
buck has never defined the difference between
Custom and Limited Edition !!!!
they have used the term interchangeably all through the years!!

Joe once grouped them together as what he called
"Collectable"

and i would agree with Joe that the customs and limited edition
Sold in the catalogs or on the web site are truly a class he called once
COLLECTABLE ..buck knives

Of note espy on the 110’s
many times in the past the same blade design was sold at times as a
regular date tang stamp with no serial number
a limited edition date stamped blade with a serial number
a custom stamped blade some times with and with out serial numbers
and also were offered to the general public some how
as standard production ...
all the above can be classed as collectable
and were offered for sale to the general public
in this i would also include build outs!!
while offered to the public they are NOT standard production issue

now some non standard issue knives that were not offered to the public are

still some are true customs such as the
award knives given out at the club events as
they are made with things to make them unique!
well as the all the knives offered by the club
YES the knives offered by the club are
customs in the truest sense of the word
they are made with materials /components not offered to the public!!!
and are a bargains at the price the club offers them

there are others that … well..
were art test or prototypes or sales man samples
that were some how different then what was sold
and in some cases were not sold at all..

the clear sided ones, artest proofs, or esp
knives made for an fellow employee with pre productions blades
these are unique also and what I would call a true custom in
that not jest any one could not buy it as
well - it was not in the production record or for sale then

well enough of my musings
it would be a good thread to see what others think defines a custom
may jest start one!!!

The Cabella's AG doesn't come in stag anymore does it? I couldn't find it if it does. I hope they continue with other handle materials and maybe even other blade materials!

The last few times that I have been over to the knife counter at Cabela's, it looks like they are going to be carrying the Rose wood versions only. They are almost out of all of the Iorn wood handel variations now. I have noticed that they still have the cut out Vangaurds, and the 110. Last time that I looked on line the 110 AG had gone up in price. HL

Thank you all for your posts, I appreciate your input. Maybe I need to redefine my request, I wasnt trying to include or exclude limited editions, one-offs, custom shop knives, web specials or buildouts, I was interested in any model 110 that differed in any way from the standard 420/brass and wood generic 'folding hunter' model. What I didnt want to hear about was someone stating how they got a 110 with stag handles and ats-34 steel off a build-out for $32 2 years ago. We need to know whats available today, tomorrow and next week. Now, I already stated 3 models, is there anything else that compares? Thanks for the help guys

And as far as I can see you didn't. I don't see any post that says anything about a knife like that. All I've seen here are posts regarding things currently available either from retailers or on auction sites. There are also 110 versions with Nickel Silver bolsters readily available if you look for them and some have some pretty nice engraved bolsters. Also the discontinued 111 which is a version of the 110. It can also often be found at auction.

Also, no one can tell you what will be available tomorrow or next week. I know my crystal ball quit working years ago. ;)

No one can give you direct links to them here, it's called deal spotting and can and will get the poster a slap from the mods.

The last 110 custom I ordered was BG42 steel, NS, FG, and Figi OrangeWood handles.
I wanted the BG42, NS, and FG, and the orangewood was the cheapest option at that time.

Would have to look up what I paid, but was less than $100. Soon after, the BG42 steel went away, so this one became a safe queen before I ever got to use it.

So at the time, that was pretty much the cheapest I could order from the custom shop with the options I wanted. Didn't care about the wood, but the orange wood turned out to be pretty nice. It was cheapest handle option.

Plumber, I like the knife in your top picture, is it one of the ones with Chuck Bucks signature in the handle, how much did it cost you?

I bought those from an auction seller and they were $55 + $5 shipping. They do have the signature on the back side. I don't know if they are a standard catalog item or not. The one that's shown on Bucks website and in the catalog has the signature on the shield side and no shield.
