Have never stripped any of my BKs or other knives before. What is the cheapest/quickest/best solvent you use to strip your Kabars? Please be specific on brands/strengths/ and what price you paid for it. Thanks.

Cheapest is probably sandpaper but definitely the most labor intensive.

Citristrip is about $12/quart at the big box stores and probably the least toxic since it's safe enough to use indoors with adequate ventilation. They use it all the time in my Woodshop Club.

I use citristrip. Some might be going on my BK15 here before too many days go by..

Citristrip:
1/2 gallon for 20 bucks at your local hardware store.

Only thing is that because it's organic based on citric acid, it will automatically patina the high carbon steel that KA-BARs consist of.

One of the major benefits of Citristrip is that because it's organic, it has no harsh solvents and can be used indoors. It's still a skin irritant (use heave duty gloves and tongs!) but doesn't contain any VOCs or stuff that can catch on fire.

I've used it to strip the paint off old cabinets and it works in about 5 minutes on latex based paint. For my Famine, I left it on for about 45 minutes out in 85-90˚ weather and that plastic scraper made short work of the coating.

There's other stuff out there that might be cheaper (Acetone, etc.) but for ease of use and safety, I wouldn't bother with anything else.

Thanks guys. Citristrip it is. Going to buy some at menards over the weekend. That blade looks great orezona and thanks for the walk- though. Got some folders to I'm probably going to try this stuff on.

I glad I checked out this thread! I tried some really stinking stuff that didn't seem to do squat on a BK15. It was cool weather though... but had to be outside. I'll be buying some Citristrip this weekend!

The cheapest, is beating it like a rented mule! It's free and you get to have fun "stripping it". Although it doesn't come off perfectly clean at least then you also have a story to tell with it!

Six-pack of Bud Select 55. No... make that a twelve-pack.

I'd like to see some pics of the stripped kabars if you would be so willing

I still haven't gotten any. Been slacking. I was going to use it on my 15 but just ending up using sandpaper. Still needs some vigorous sanding to get the rest off but it's as smooth as bewbs right now.

Yeah would be fairly hard to beat the coating off a 15 though. Thats what I plan on just doing with my 9's. Probably going to use cirtistrip/kleen strip on my new 5 thats coming.

:D Usually takes them a 1L of JD before they start making bad decisions with me. They strip themselves awfully fast when I whip out my 9 in"............combat bowie though.:D

Got done with the rest of the sanding on the 15. Turned out pretty good. No way in hell I'd use sand paper on a 9 or something unless seeking some good exercise. I got blisters on me fingers!:D Gonna buy some citristrip/kleenstrip soon for the 5 that's on the way I think. Whatevers cheapest.
