Hey everyone, My large seb is my favourite, and most expensive knife that i own. (think of a student, with no income).

I was lkooking at the lockup, and thought it was pretty much 100%, was wondering if i should send it in to CR to see if they can do something so i get more life out of this knife, i have heard that as lockup moves over, once its at 100% i can start to get blade play etc etc.

Will this happen with my sebbie?

I personally wait until there's a real problem, like blade play before I send any knife in.
I have more than one framelock that locks up like that, and as long as it's solid, I don't worry.
Of course... if you want to send it in, go for it.

WOW, A "P" Sebenza, Thats a great knife you have there, Congrats................I would probably not send it in until there is blade play, but if it bothers you, by all means send it in. CRK will fix it and it wll be good as new............I would try what "stjames" stated and rotate the "stop pin collar", that may help. Did you try taking it apart, cleaning it, and putting it back together ? Many times this will "adjust" the lockbar also. If none of these fix it, email CRK and they will sent you up with shipping instructions for your knife.

no i havent rotated, but i will when i clean the knife up. I read about people "peening" lockbars which involves hitting them with a hammer, but i was pretty sure this would void any warranty.

What is a P sebenza?

Here is a quote from Anne Reeve from my CRK Timeline in the Sticky: "Additional info regarding "P" Sebenzas
Unfortunately, we have no good records of Sebenza numbers – we never thought for a moment any one would be interested so many years later!! Only the Original Sebenzas were marked with P – Larges introduced in 1991 and Smalls introduced in 1993. We honestly have no record of how many Large “P” Sebenzas we made – we think we did them for about 2 and a half years. We numbered up to 121 for the Small “P” Sebenzas and I am not sure we did any marked with just “P” and no serial number. I think we stopped marking the “P” around mid 1994!.....On Behalf of CRK....Thanks Anne !"

The "P" Sebenza were the first Sebenzas made. They had ATS-34 blade steel and are quite collectable and valuable. They also did not have a pocket clip. Additional info about the Sebenzas can be found in my CRK Timeline Sticky. The "P" Sebenza had the Classic/21 style handle with the old "regular" blade profile. I certainly wish CRK would bring them back as I like the 21 style handle, but prefer the regular blade profile better. You certainly have a beauty there for sure.

Tadah! took it apart, moved the stop ring, tightened it back up!

the detent ball on lockbar looks to be worn a bit, is this normal?

Yeah that happens on the older ones it seems. I am not sure if the ball is different or if it just wears down after time but on a 1994 P Sebenza I owned
the ball detent was very worn down and the retention of the blade was more in the action than the detent.

It didn't affect the knife much though because it had one of the best fitted actions I have ever used on a folder. It had a firm smooth opening but the best description it is like opening the door on a really large safe. Blade retention was never a problem.

Glad to hear spinning the stop pin helped with the travel of the lockbar.

in the defense of that last comment, the pic does not accurately represent the lockup, i guess i took a bad angled shot.

I would NOT send it in for this unless there is blade play in the lockup position. Why? I sent a Seb in for this very reason and the fix was to replace the blade. This means you would loose the ATS-34 blade and get a new S30V blade. If you are at all concerned about the collector value of this knife, be aware of this. If you want the knife only for use and not collectable value, then CR will definately take care of you and get the stop corrected, but it may mean replacing the blade.

I'm just sayin'....

That Sebenza is out of spec and a danger to you. Please send it to me for proper environmentally friendly disposal! :D :D :)

Great knife you have there! I am also a student and feel your pain when it comes to finances, but if it has no blade play no need to send it in unless you want to, but keep in mind what DallasSTB said.

My personal opinion is that it is time to buy a new one and put that one in the safe due to its rarity.

I dont really have the cash to buy a *NEW* one, im thinking of finding the value of this, trading it for a newer seb + cash etc, unless i find a good deal on a used sebbie.

Put that knife in the for sale section (you will need to upgrade your membership though) and I am sure people will pay almost anything you want for it!

How much did they charge you to replace your blade?

Nyefmaker or Fooj have better information I'm sure, but I think that a new S30V blade is around $125 and a damascus blade is a little less than $300 depending on the pattern.

I'm sure that if you email CR, they will provide a quote fairly quickly.

If the problem is the blade then wouldn't they replace it for free?
