What's the current knife laws in Ohio?

No autos. Balis are OK. Carry any size folder and up to 4.5" fixed concealed. Anything larger is legal to carry in the open, but I wouldn't reccomend it.

My info might be a bit old and the new CCW bill may have changed some knife rules. Be careful, you're carrying not me.

BTW, where in Ohio are ya? I live near Akron and goto Kent State.

That be great if you are right about any size folder... I want to get the Spyderco Military (about 4 inches in blade length) - but if it was illegal to carry, there wouldn't be much use getting it.

I thought Balis were illegal... I dunno... I hope you're right, It be fun to get the Spyderco SpyderFly to carry!

I may end up calling the local Police department tomorrow and asking them. I find it odd that it's so hard to find out what the current laws are! I have searched Google again again and I can never find anything!

BTW I have been to Akron many times and a few times to Kent State. My cousin used to go there and I visited him a few times.

Thanks!

Actually, autos are fine to own and carry in the State of Ohio, just not to sell or buy:

From the Bernard Levine website, http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/oh.txt -- the only section of the Ohio Revised Code that deals with automatic knives:

" SEC. 2933.20. (A) No person shall do any of the following:
...
(4) Manufacture, possess for sale, sell, or furnish to
any person other than a law enforcement agency for authorized use
in police work, any brass knuckles, cestus, billy, blackjack,
sandbag, switchblade knife, springblade knife, gravity knife, or
similar weapon..."

And from Tactical Knives, current as of 1998, http://www.amatecon.com/switchblade.html

One question that remains is how current this citation of SEC. 2933.20 happens to be.

Also, your local municipality, however, may have more restrictive laws -- and these can bite you.

Exactly. There is no mention of knife blade length in the ORC.

Ask a sheriff's deputy, preferably one with a few years experience. They enforce state laws.

As was mentioned, local municipalities may have more restrictive laws and views on sharp pointy items....

All boils down to where you are, and what you're doing.

Looks like I've missed the quick-post boat on this one. .In any case, it looks like you've gotten your question answered. I've carried just about every kind of knife short of a two-handed sword and never had a problem. .

Are you sure they are illegal to sell in Ohio? ive seen "assisted opening" knives sold at walmart... lots of different models.... is that the same as an "auto"?

No, stuff like the Kershaw Speed-Safe knives aren't the same as an auto. To tell you the truth, I don't see that much of a difference in the two. I've got a Kershaw Blackout around here someplace that is basically just as fast as an auto. With a lot of practice, my BM910 is just about as fast. I'd guess offhand that the difference would need to be measured using a high-speed camera between all three of them. The only advantage some autos have IMO is the ability to open them with a gloved hand. I could open any of my working knives with a glove on, but a nice large pushbutton auto makes it soooo simple. .

I went to a gun show West of Columbus, Ohio, last weekend and there were any number of knife dealers there, selling autos, with the police roaming around. i asked and was told that you could buy one and own one in your own home, but could not carry one.
