what's the deal with all those "custom" leeks on that auction site?

This has been bugging me for a while. You know all those leeks with modified scales, with designs, but with regular leek model numbers that are being sold on that auction site - they don't seem to be available anywhere else.

Are those real leeks that came from the Kershaw factory that way? Are they knock-offs? Is somebody out there modifying leeks on a large scale? I don't get it.

They are engraved scales. Real leeks that people ruin with stupid pictures and sayings.

I think some of those engravings are cool. I would love to design one myself if I had the means. Some of the saying are stupid though...

I'm not a big fan of sayings or engravings on knives.
Unless it was name. But thats about it.

Those custom scale Leeks are ridiculously overpriced.

I'd like a blue smoked handle with a clownfish engraved on it, but then again I'm weird like that.

Productions sold already customized have been around. Yellowhorse comes to mind.

Well, everyone has the right to customize his own Leek, then to try to sell it on the auction site.
I prefer, however, the original Leeks. There are many production versions to collect.

I can't even remember what knife it was but a while back I saw a knife that had rule #9 engraved on it and thought it was pretty cool. As long as you are doing it to a normal production knife and not a rare limited knife I say go for it.

If I think I know who your talking about, it's Serenity Workshop. They also like to put biohazard signs on knives. In another thread someone said they messages them, asking why they do that and they said because people buy them.

Ok that's pretty cool:cool:

I bought one for a friend a while back, not much more than retail if I recall correctly.
The engraving was well done... but they must have effed up the torsion bar because it didn't open right.

Also another seller "knifecorner", but they are both located in Fort Worth, TX and are probably related. Designs I remember seeing include "praying cowboy", "catacombs", "Mayan calendar", "don't tread on me", "koi fish", "infidel", "tiger eyes", and my personal favorite "I heart boobies".

I bought one from a member here on the Exchange last year. It is a red smoke Leek with digital camo lasered into the front scale. I love it.

All "designs" considered, I think the digi-camo versions did end up looking pretty cool.

I have a small collection of the factory Leeks and a couple "advertising" versions. But I have not seen one of the modified eBay Leeks that I have wanted to buy. Who wants "I -heart- Boobies" on their knife???

^HA!
I saw that one.

Unless it has a unique model number (customizing is done by Kershaw), I don't want it.
I just bought the 1660RED Leek from house of blades. That one is cool.

I saw a digital camo one in the classifieds here, bought it, swapped the black blade for a CB one & gave the black blade/stainless handle knife to my brother in law for his birthday. He chose that over the orange Skyline I bought specifically for him.
