What's the deal with blade replacement?

So I've had this 110 X floating around in my tool box for a few years. It's got a broken blade and the scarring of beginning sharpening. I've seen some references on this forum of blade replacement and was curious about the process and potential cost.

I'd just like another 420HC blade, do I send the knife in with a letter or email/call first?

Buck will clean it for 6.95 and replace the blade for 10 bucks. The blade replacement includes cleaning. Contact them through their website.

BTW- Who does anything for $6.95 these days?

Just send the knife in with a letter to Buck's warranty dept. how it happened and they'll let you know what they will do . Darn, that was a 425M blade . DM

Thanks guys, I'll get in contact with them on Monday.

I wasn't the one who broke the tip and actually saved the knife from the junk drawer. It was a "new" knife for me one summer when I didn't have any money, got a lot of use out of it as an EDC for quite a while. I'd like to carry it again but would like it to be a little pointier. :)

Just take a magic marker and make a line from the top of the blade where it starts to curve down to the bottom tip where it is broken. That way you have a guide of where to file or grind to. You can do it by hand with a file with the blade held tightly in a vise while filing but it will take you at least 15 to 20 minutes of hard filing to get it there. Or just use an angle grinder or small belt sander and make a bunch of quick passes and you can do it in a few minutes without breaking a sweat. As long as you are careful not to overheat the blade and keep a water filled can to dip the knife blade when it gets too hot to hold you will be OK and not ruin the heat treat.
You must always be able to touch the knife blade as a guide to keep from overheating it. By hand filing you don't need to worry about it.

I have done this to many of my friends knives and to some of my own when I didn't particularly like the blade shape and they all turn out great. It will save you time and money and you will have a one of a kind custom BUCK that you did yourself.

That sounds the best bet. I echo the loss of the 425M blade...I wonder if Leroy has a usable 425M blade...

A new blade will likely require a new backspring as well (for that particular knife)...Not that you'd have to pay for it under warranty, but it would be less of the original knife...

Now, if it were me, I'd call/email Leroy and see if he has a 425M blade he'll part with... ;)

334dave might even have one...

You've got quite a chunk missing there. If you don't care if you get a new blade, send it in and pay the $10 to get it replaced. If you want to try to do it yourself, you can use a dremel and just grind at the back until you get the point you want, be careful to cool it every so often so you don't ruing the heat treat. If you ruin it, no big deal, just send it in and pay the $10, what do you lose by trying?
