Hi guys. Just wondering if anyone knows the story about how the 186 changed completely. Thanks,

In what way do you mean? Are you referring to the Model 186 Titanium Folder from about 1986? That model number was recycled for use on another knife about 10 or 12 years later, the model 186 Odyssey, a liner lock knife.

Yes, exactly. when did the titanium 186 exsist? When was the liner lock introduced?

The Titanium 186 was introduced in the '87 catalog and was in it through the '88 edition. Ten years later in the '98 catalog the Odyssey 186 was introduced.

What would be more interesting is to know what internal process is used by Buck to assign model numbers. Joe?

I'm guessing there is no process and such things just happen.

Which is part of the reason why many interesting changes and variations occur and collectors have such fascinating puzzles to solve with Buck knives and history.

:)
