What's the deal with the super-large Pics?.

I like to look at nice detailed pics of knives that are for sale. But...I see these pics that are an 8x10 of a pivot screw, or a lock-up that's so large that I can't tell what it is...and the pics go on and on, and maybe...later on...there is a pic that is the entire knife.
How nice is that? Drives me buggy...let's compromise and show detail where detail is needed or desired... It's getting nutty out here...

I know, if your not on a phone in portrait mode, it's a large picture and it's going to be hard to fit in lower widescreen resolutions.

I thought the forum automatically resizes the pictures to fit the monitor/phone screen?

It does for me.... Not sure I get the problem given that.

The "text/email for pics" threads that are qucikly becoming a norm, on the other hand...

Of course I would agree. By default cell phone photos (the standard these days) are HUGE.

Posting directly from the snapped image with NO post cropping or editing (for sharpness) will result in a poor image

(Like Sergeua Sergeua 's example above. That image would look better at 500-wide, NOT 1200 wide. It's got no further detail up close.)

I like that the forum software limits display width to 1000 pixels wide, no matter WHAT size the original is. Click for larger. Smart.

Good display: Cropped core image of entire knife well lit, add in two-three detail shots. (Don't show 10+ images. You just gave them the satisfaction of owning it without buying it. Leave them wanting more.... ;)

The frustration Sonnydaze is describing (and I understand it completely) is demonstrated perfectly by the example pic Sergeua posted. The actual size of that pic is 2432px by 4320px (which is the actual size of the pic which must be rendered before the forum software automatically resizes it to the display size of 1246px x 2213px. This results in a somewhat long load time .... especially if a post contains 5 or more of these super large pics. In addition, viewing on a desktop screen, in many instances, involves significant vertical scrolling to get a glimpse of the entire pic. Quite frankly, if you take a reasonably good picture of a knife .... there is absolutely no reason to use a pic that large. While I don't consider myself a photographer, I believe the pics I post of knives are more than acceptable at actual sizes of around 900 px wide by 600 px high. It is quite easy to downsize images before uploading them somewhere for posting. But hey, that's just the way I look at it. Here is an example pic of a knife I no longer have, but posted in a sales listing. Image size is 900px x 576px.

If the photos are too big, folks don't like how it crowds the screen. If they're too small, folks don't like that they can't see every inch of the knife in up-close microscopic detail to inspect it for dings and scratches. And if the photos are not in the thread at all but just a link to Imgur or another host site, then folks don't like that they have to click on a link.

There's no winning. Unless you're a professional like SharpByCoop SharpByCoop , who somehow manages to pull it off perfectly. Unfortunately, most of us aren't skilled photographers.

Guilty!!!!

I am too stupid to know how my iPhone works. There are no settings that I am aware of. I think that might be the problem with more than just me.
I am sorry. I will listen to any advice.

I never knew that was even there! I am technologically illiterate in the first place.

Sergeua Sergeua - with respect - as a knife photo, would be even better cropped a bit with the focus on the knives:

I agree with OP Sonnydaze Sonnydaze especially with regard to some photos that are so large or out of perspective for the detail that often a sense of scale is impossible to determine and the fine aspects of the knife are lost. Waste of a good sales opportunity by my 2¢. :(

SharpByCoop SharpByCoop - good advice sir! Keep'em wanting more. I'd like to know how you combine 2 or more perspectives in one photo. Probably a well deserved trade secret. ;) Certainly summarizes the knife better than a raft of photos. I guess I should do the google and look for a how to. That's a technique worth learning.
