Question is in the title.. What's the difference between the two blades or are they just the same thing but with two different names?

Not quite. If I understand, the British, military style khukuri went through several re-designs, starting with World War One's "Mark 1," and on through the post-war "Mark V," on which the BAS is based.

There are a few differences between the two models, if you check out the kurkri pages on HI's website you can compare the two. The WWII seem to be a little more tip heavy and generally tend to be a inch or two longer than the standard BAS...the blade tends to be more angled on the WWII. Now with all things HI it depends greatly on the individual knife.

Thanks, that's what happens when my eyes are half closed and asleep, didn't even notice the 2-4 degree difference in bend or the 1.5 inch difference in length between the two!! :p Haven't seen a pic of a ww2 in ages either...

Also look at the overall design of the blade. The Bas is the current service style khuk (correct me if im wrong pls), it is a lighter more slimline blade than the current HI WWII. The WWII is a much beefier blade heavier at the tip giving more end weight , thicker spine and larger handle. My version is 17 1/2 inches at 30oz check out picture. I also have a 15in BAS and to me theres no comparison. IMHO the WWII is the powerhouse over the BAS any day.

Generally speaking the WWII is going to out chop the BAS by a good margin. Think about the BAS as if it were the Ka-Bar of the Khuk world. It's a very jack of all trades design...not a bad thing:thumbup:

The WWII usually comes a little more wasp waisted, tip heavy, and a bit blunter in the snout.

Uncle Bill once said that the WWII is probably the best combination of tool and weapon in HI's line up. I have to agree. The AK is a chopping chore dynamo. The BAS seems to hover in the niche of a khuk that can do chores and be pressed into weapon duty. The WWII seems to chop and slash equally as well. The M-43 with its weight forward curve really bites deep, but (to me) does not lend itself to as much tool use.

YMMV:)

edit to add: Nice set up there, Pugs:) It's really tough to beat the Glock/khuk combo. My EDC is a 15.5" boomerang AK and a G36;)

Especially that one, it gots the fun switch!

Lol,
Thanks guys, you really cant beat the set up, and yes its got the fun switch a very fun piece, if I dont get through with the first mag, I chop through with the WWII.:D:D

The bottom one is the WWII? Looks like it has an elongated point too..

The baby is getting a baby pen khuk for their first birthday... right? :p

Sorry, I should have clarified the pic. The top is the WWII. I got them at the same time. Of the 2, the WWII is the hands down better chopper, but the BAS is no slouch.

Both models look like they'd be good no-nonsense khukuris.

Aesthetically the BAS appeals to me more. It's like a Sirupati with a more stout blade. Very graceful looking!

At a meet a few years ago I got to compare the WWII and the BAS chopping through rounds for the fire. The WWII whipped through them as well as an axe and sank its blunt nose into the chopping block. The BAS didn't have the oomph to make it through but felt much livlier in the hand, the WWII feeling nose heavy IMO.

Still glad I got the WWII.
