What's the difference between pushing or pulling while sharpening?

Using a stone I'll be pushing the blade into the stone to sharpen it. In other words, the edge is facing away from me and I'm pushing it away.

Using a belt or shekel system, since I wouldn't dare put the edge into the belt, rather I bring it away from the edge.

One method says push to raise a burr, the other is basically a pull. Does it really matter how a burr is raised, if it even needs to be raised at all?

So, push or pull? Benefits of each? Reasons?

Thanks....

The burr, for me, is an indicator that I've reached the apex. It doesn't have to be big.

Many do both leading and trailing as a sort of scrubbing motion although that's not my style.

I say whatever works for you is fine.
