What is the really world difference between the Busse Basic line & the Combat line.

Does the Basic 9 or 7 work as well as the Battle Mistress or Steel Heart in the field or are there substantial differences?

Well, INFI is substantially better than M-INFI, Micarta is much more durable than rubber, and having an exposed tang (and pommel) can be great.

But, M-INFI is still awesome and rubber feels great in the hand. It really all depends on you, and what you like and are looking for. I know this is vague, but it's a tough topic, really.

BTW, the basics won't be around for long (after one more run, they'll be discontinued), so if you want one, I'd get it now.

Hope that helps!

On all the text that I've read on the subject. Cliff Stamp's testing especially. Obviously, substantially is hard to define, but the difference is definitely not marginal.

I did not get that impression after reading Cliff's review of M-INFI vs INFI (click here). In his conclusion he describes INFI as "slightly better".

His review on the Basic 7 (click here) mentions that "M-INFI seems to perform at a similar level as D2 at 62 RC and INFI a bit better".

Combat line is slightly heavier & slightly more "blade heavy" than the Basics, which gives a slight edge to the Combats for chopping. The three handle types (straight & E-handled micarta on Combats, Respirene(sp?) on Basics) each have their devotees. Definitely a subjective choice.

Do you intend to do a lot of chopping and what kind of handle do you prefer? What is your actual level of use/abuse for the intended knife? Do you need it for extended daily use in harsh military field conditions? Lengthy trips into wilderness/survival environments? Weekend hikes with family? Yardwork & kitchen duty around home? Daily use as a job-site knife? A collection knife that will remain in a safe? Whether the differences are considered "substantial" will change depending on how you will be using the blade.

The upshot of my comments at the URL below is: The absolute limit of differences between Combat and Basic models (INFI vs M-INFI, handle construction) are defined at levels and in environments that a human couldn't survive. Both grades of knife are pretty bombproof. http://www.bussecombat.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000009

Busse blades are my knives of choice because from what testing has been done (Cliff's especially) and from my personal experience they are the best all-around blades at virtually any price. When eyebrows raise at the price of a Busse I ask the skeptic, "Well, you can buy a knife at pretty much any price from $20 on up. I know what my life is worth to me. What's your life worth to you??" I'll bet my life on either grade of Busse knives, knowing full well they won't fail me.

I've got a few more E hanldle pics somewhere, I can post those as well if you need em. :)

I love the Basic-5. Just the perfect blade. . . well, one of the perfect blades. Now that I have my BATACs and a HRLM, I'm not sure anymore. LOL

I like Res-C. I like Micarta. Tough call.

Gotta love em. My favorite is the 9, though. I actually prefer the rubbery sythetic handles....comfier. Those who say "looks cheap" really should read
Veblen's "Theory of the Leisure Class".

Fellows, I guess the Combat line and Basic line have a bit difference. Have'em?
Please, post pics of the Combat line.

Looking for pics of Combat line

In the context of this thread, the Combat line was the Ergo series with black crinkle finish and micarta handles. In other words, the production models which weren't Basics (rubber handles and Mod-INFI).

This is a Combat Grade Natural Outlaw, just before I applied the paint stripper:

Thank you, Rick!
I never thoght the Combat Line = Combat Grade (Ergo/black/black).

to be clear, jerry no longer produces the basic line (except for ganzas). when it was introduced it was intended to be a lower cost option. i believe the basic 3, for example, retailed for around 100.00. if im wrong here please correct me. the combat line were the ergos.

in recent years, there has been the combat grade model, normally crinkle coated, with choice of micarta scales. some knives were offered in double cut as well.

then there is the le, normally satin w/tiger hide or snakeskin scales.
