What's the difference: SJTAC vs CG SJTAC?

I tried searching but couldn't find info on this. I've seen some SJTACs for sale and some CG SJTACs, sometimes side by side, so it seems there is a distinction. What's the difference?

Only thing I gleaned from Hog cult is that there is no SJTAC that is not a CG except the LEs. Doesn't explain why I've seen SJTACs and CG SJTACs listed side by side in the exchange though.

All CG SJTACs are SJTACs. SJTAC is Satin Jack with the TAC handle. Not all SJTACs are CG SJTACs. CG stands for combat grade. SJTAC LEs are not CG SJTACs, but are SJTACs. LE stands for limited edition. Limited editions, special editions, and customs are not CG SJTACs. Variants may or may not be labeled CG, but I tend to think of them as variants, and not CG. CGs are the most commonly encountered, and are the most produced. They are the "standard line." I hope this clears things up.

If it is not a custom, LE, SE, or variant, then it is combat grade (CG).

Yeh...what he said above.

You may be getting confused about the differences betweem the Satin Jack, and SJTAC. Those are two different knives.

And any info you want is pretty easily available on www.bussecollector.com in the "catalog" link.

It can be confusing but start with the Satin Jack (designated "SJ") then add descriptors.

The original SJs had straight handles. The "TAC" is a particular handle style shared with the Badgers (i.e. BATAC) and means "tactical". The TAC handle comes in regular and magnum.

SJTACs come in additional flavors:
  • CG - Combat Grade coated blades
  • LE - Limited Edition with satin blades and tigerhide micarta
  • SE - Special Edition to celebrate big shows
  • EBS - Embrace the Suck was a special CGSJTAC to honor our soldiers

Bonus info: The JackHammer is a modified SJTAC with CBT (bevels) and a clip + swedge.

And now there also is the Comp SJTAC - very much like the Jackhammer, but no bevels or clip/swedge.:D:thumbup:

I hope this doesn't count as a hijacking of Balislinger's thread.
From what I can see at HOG CULT is that the SJTAC CG is 0.187" thick, the SJTAC LE is 0.22". It also says the 2008 SJTAC SE is 0.27"? I have a side by side pic of the 08 next to an 07 BATAC SE which is 0.27". The 07 BATAC SE looks thicker than the 08 SJTAC SE. Which means that the 08 SJTAC SE should be at 0.25" or 0.22"???
I'm wanting to get a sheath from Cuddy Bear for my 08 SJTAC SE but don't know if the SJTAC he has in stock is the same thickness as mine. I really don't want to have to send it in. Any help would be appreciated.

The 2008 SE SJTAC is 0.220 inches thick, and its handles are Magnum thickness.

I suppose that this one counts as a SJTAC variant...

So it's the same as the LE. Thanks! That's just what I needed! Now all I have to do is see if Mr. Chuddy Bear has one in stock.

There were also some not-quite SJTLEs offered in a 'Ganzaa that were LE rejects with DCBB and snakeskin.

I don't think Jerry uses the term "Combat Grade" anymore. It is just one of those things that has lingered.

I heard the original run of CG SJTACs had convex edges, do more recent runs of CG SJTACs also have convex edges? I have an SJTAC and it has an angled edge.

The original run of SJTACs, meaning the CGs and LEs, had convex grinds. The ETS SJTACs did, too. I am hoping that the Competition Grade ones have a convex grind.

All of my non-LE Satin ones have flat grinds.

Satin (0.220") + Snakeskin:

Satin (0.220") + Smooth Orange/Black G-10 (CupidGanza #43):

Mammoth SJTAC (CupidGanza #81):

My 2008 SE SJTAC is the same way, but I haven't taken any snapshots of it yet.

That's too bad. The full-height convex grind on the LEs is really nice looking. I'd definitely put them far ahead of the SEs and customs in that case, as nice as those are. I wonder if the convex grinds had to be done completely by hand and not CNC'd.

Can someone explain to me the difference bewteen a convex grind and a convex edge? How do they compare to my competition Sarsquatch? Because that one does not seem to have an angled edge.

There also a few orphans floating around too. This one was purchase at the Oregon Knife Collectors 2008 show in Eugene. It has Mag G-10 scales and mics out around .197 if I remember correctly. I'm not sure of the grind as it has a very small line across the top similiar to a sabre ground knife.

you really said it:thumbup:

the convex edge is just that ....convex on edge only

a convex ground blade is convex from spine to tip.

see you can convex edge any blade, but not all blades are convex ground.

Hope that makes since after a few rounds ouf tonics and maritinins

scrw u I can 2 spell;):D
