Can someone please explain the difference between the 3 brands Busse / Swamp Rat / Scrap yard other than the models or styles.

Do they all come from the same production facility?
Are they made from different quality of materials??
Anything else??

I get the impression that Busse is much more desirable and I even find myself drawn to Busse over the others, but why????

Thanks again everybody.

They arfe all good. Busse is the high end of the line, but if you ask me, the best deal for the money is scrapyard, by far. you get modified S7 for under $200 typically.

oh and welcome.......

Also:

(1) Handle materials. Busse & Swamp Rats will be mostly micarta or G10. While Scrap Yard is Res-C. All excellent. Just preference.

(2) Vaiety. Busse has perhaps the most variety followed by Swamp Rat and the Scrap Yard (but SY is newer so give them time).

(3) Busse has the "Cult" angle going. So it's got that going for it too. :D
Anything else guys?

Busse- smells like CBL and cigars

Swamp Rat - well, let your mind imagine

Scrap Yard - smells like a wet dog :p

Busse and Swamp Rat use micarta
Scrap Yard uses some kind of truck tire stuff ;)

Busse - Destructor Bot

Swamp Rat - Bender

Scrap Yard - K-9 :confused: (will only geeks get that one?) :p

From a price point Busse is generally the most expensive followed by Swamp Rat and then Scrapyard.

Busse = INFI
Swamp Rat = SR101
Scrapyard = SR77

I also believe Busse and Swamp Rat are made in the same facility, but Scrapyard is made in a separate place altogether.

Welcome to the addiction!:thumbup:

I believe that Scrapyard knives are made in Wauseon, but sold and serviced by Dan and Patty in Texas.

What he said. At least the parts of it that I understood... :o :D

You guys all miss the distinction. It can all be explained mathematically:

Time = name recognition> reputation/advertising+ Infi-101+ 77< Rc[weight] % length= money

This equation has been proven correct many times:D. ss

Thanks guys for the info and the welcomes.

I get the drift now. :thumbup:

Why doesn't anybody else use infi if it is so good??? :confused:

It's the steel + Jerry's heat treat that makes it INFI!

"INFI is a proprietary steel and heat-treat protocol developed by Busse Combat Knife Co. It is ONLY available through Busse Combat."

busse uses only infi, and has full production available to them. they control the shop during the daytime orders, and they run constant military and consumer production runs.

swamp rat has used other steels, but is now mostly dedicated to sr101. they produce less then busse combat, and use the shop during off hours (I think...). sr101 is (so I'm told) chemically modified 52100 that is heat treated to retain malleability at high hardness, attempting to gain similar performance to infi. prices tend to be about 50-100$ less then busse's msrp. swamp rat has used d2 in smaller blades, sr77 in their axe/hatchet, and s30v in their folder. While they currently concentrate on micarta slabbed full tang knives, they have previously used reciprene-c rubberized handles. the idea behind the company is to provide infi like performance at a lower cost.

scrap yard... I don't know about scrap yard. I'm not sure where their facilities are, if they use the busse compound or are complete seperate from it... but they have used different steels as well, concentrating on sr77. they have used infi before, and have used various handle components from both busse and swamp rat knives (both the bulkier single texture swamp rat variety, as well as the multi textured busse basic line variety). the idea behind the company is to provide infi like performance as cheaply as possible... (I think?)

as far as i know, all three companies have jerry as a guiding hand to their heat treatment and steel choice/handling.

scrap yard is located in texas
they use sr-77 steel which is probly the toughest of the three steels
they provide the most bang for your buck and are made in very small production batches
they are the yougest company and was founded by dan who is jerry's brother
they have a very loyal following
and btw you could probly ask coldone about scrap yard, he is the forums mod and owns ever dog ever made
