What's the Emerson Controversy?

Perusing these threads, I have seen several references to some sort of problem with Emerson knives.

I used to have a couple of BM CQC7s, and am contemplating getting an Emerson CQC-7A spear point to supplant my aging Endura, since I was told that Emerson pulled the rights away from BM and started doing production knives himself. Anyone know why? Those BM CQC7s were excellent working knives.

Is there something I should know???

I'm not sure what the deal is on the forum. I'm looking into getting one of the commander wave knifes to go with a Michrotech auto.
I'm all over the board in my collecting. If I like the way it looks I'll buy it. :)

You're right.
There's a great deal of controversy

All I'm going to say on the matter is:

If you want one, don't let anyone talk you out of it.
If you DON'T want one, don't let anyone talk you INTO it.

I love EKI knives.
Others don't.

The End.
(hopefully)

Some of us like them, some don't. The two factions tend to argue ceaselessly over this, kinda like rival gangs - someone pops up every now and again with "Emerson sucks", or "What's the problem with Emerson", or on rare occasions "I love my Emerson". Then both sides send shots over the other's bow, and we wait for a moderator to shut us up by force. That's the REAL controversy.

I love my commander!

Anybody taking bets to see how long one of the known emmerson haters starts ranting again???

(I'm not going to mention names)

I considered buying one until I heard about qualitity control problems, I guess they are still a new company trying to work out the bugs.

Emerson Knives are pretty knives. The problem is they are very unstable for hard work because their quality control.

Brother; what a deal... I'm glad I asked.

Thanks to those who posted links; those were VERY interesting threads.

I think I'll stay with Spyderco...;)

Seeing how every thread on this has turned into chaos, lets try and keep it civilized. :D Anyways I am a big fan of the original BM CQC-7, had the first stolen and the second served me well for years until I retired it. Nothing wrong with it just loosened the screws for cleaning too many times. :( The contract with Benchmade ran out and Emerson was now able to produce the CQC-7 on his own so it was not renewed. In the begining there were a few problems and we heard this and that and Emerson knives suck. I was one of those that turned my nose on Emerson knives cause of all the negative comments. But one day they came out with the waaaaaaay cool SOCFK. I bought one and found absoulutely no problems with it. The knife was perfect all over. Then came the Commander....this is the knife that everyone grudges about QC. I bought one and the first thing I did was go over it with a fine tooth comb. I am happy to say that there was absolutely nothing wrong with this knife. This is the best knife I have had. The only problem is I seem to like my Camillus EDC more and tend to carry that little bugger more. Besides it is almost like a mini-commander. :D Buy one if you want it, if you find something wrong EK will fix it for you. Of course every knife company has QC problems. Microtech is toted as tops in QC yet they had many problems with the LCC D/A when they came out. Spyderco has an outstanding QC yet they do have a few slip past every so often. Some of us don't realize that most knife companys are not that big and don't have a large staff. Could be that the same person that packs and ships the knife is the same one that inspects it while they look over and see the other thousand knifes that they still have to go thru.

Ok this is the longest post I've done so thats all I have to say
:D :D :D

[...the contract ran out...]

I see; I wondered why BM quit making them.

I too really liked my BM CQC7; I just found that the tanto blade shape wasn't quite as utilitarian as I wanted.

NIB, thanks for the info; BTW, I am an alumnus of The Bragg School For Boys. I got out in '78, but spent a week on the Range 19 complex in '92 as a guest of the guys who don't live and work there (according to the government)...{BFG}

Glad to hear that :)

Well, if you check the resent threads you'll find that honest Emerson fans start dumping on eveyone who doesn't share their opinion long before they(emerson critics) manage to write 1st msg ;) Sort of preventive action I guess :)
E.g you, already with "rolleyes" and "mad" even though there was nothing so far.

P.S. Is your commander 99 or later BTW?

I'm not sure if I believe all of this Emerson QC stuff... But it sounds like it would be best to purchase an Emerson at a knife shop where you can handle it first. You should be able to tell if there are problems while you have it in you hand.

You talking about that place with all those "Maintnance guys", "Security Engineers" and "Administrative Personel". :D
We call it "Red Roof Inn", with all those new buildings with red roofs. Rumor still has it that some guy whose car broke down in front of it dissapeared. I know nothing more....I'm just a guy in Division. :D

OK here is my point of view. I don't give two hoots who runs the company or if he is the king of knives or whatever some call him:rolleyes: ! If the knife is good I do not care.

However... A few months ago I was seriously interested in a waved Commander. Here is the truth no bull, I wanted one but knew very little about them or even how that wave feature worked! Yep call me dumb. Now in truth I had heard a lot of comments about poor QC and thus asked about the commander and wave feature. I was careful not to start a flame war with my questions and they were from a genuine potential customer. Mike Payne can I am sure confirm I was asking him to get me some knives (2x Camillus EDC 154CM, Blue Delica, Starmate and Native). Now I was considering getting the Commander but went for the Starmate and Native instead. The reasons? Quite simple I was bombarded by e-mails from a group telling me the Commander did things no knife could do and e-mails from people who told me straight up that the design was great but the current models were a dogs dinner compared to the 98 model. I was advised to get a 98 model and tweek it to do this and that and something else. You know what I did? I went for the Starmate and Native and thought stuff this...

My point is simple, I had no bias but when so many tell me the commander is not the knif it once was and even a 98 model needed a lot of playing with, I walked away. Now when the Commander is made without a chisel grind and is better made than the 98 model I will snap one up! Why should I part with serious cash for a knife that even the Usual Suspects admit is not the knife it once was? Does it cost less to buy or just make?

Let me duck and grab the flame retardent blanket, but there we go from the horses mouth, no smoke without fire.:(

I love my Emerson knives, particularly the Commander. The one constant is that one of my Commanders is back up to my Walther, SIG Sauer or Glock.
I am not saying that there have never been problems with EKI's QC. There have been enough complaints that there may be a problem. BUT, there are cases of bad QC with other makers, and there is not the same frenzy to destroy the image of the company or maker as there is with EKI.
I have read posts that say one is not happy with Emerson's QC because the finish came off the screws. Well, if anyone with that problem had bothered to inquire (before flaming EKI), EKI does not make the screws. They are supplied by a contractor. How is EKI at fault for an oversight by a contractor? If the finish of the screws is that much of an issue, EKI will supply new screws, when they are contacted.
I have also heard complaints that the blades are chisel ground on the wrong side. That comment deserves the
Yup, you either like EKI products or you don't.
Anybody gotta cheap CQC6 to spare? :)

This ongoing tennis match about Emerson, reminds me of another sort of ongoing "discussion" that takes place in another industry. Stick with me for a second - I will tie this together! I am an old time motorcyclist. I ride HDs but have ridden and owned many other bike brands in the past. There are those who hate Harley Davidsons, and I have found out that most of them will never change their minds. Their minds are set and they dig deep to find every flaw associated with the brand.

That seems to be the case with Emerson Knives. I enjoy this bantering, providing it does not get out of hand. Those folks who constantly and persistantly try to talk potential new Emerson owners out of their future Emerson purchases, will not change their minds. Some of them seem to dislike Emerson products so much that it has become a crusade. On the other hand, many of those Emerson supporters are truly "died in the wool" supporters. I very much like Emerson products, although I think they are overpriced (sounds like an HD discussion!). This all sounds so familiar to me: "The older ones are better" "They don't hold up under hard use" "The company is too greedy" "They are not what they used to be". Emerson Knives seems to have become the "Harley Davidson" of knives. You like em or you hate em. Doesn't seem to be too much of a middle ground.

imho if any emersons have probs its the CQC7 series - commanders, etc are great but CQC7's are, well lets say 'iffy' on QC imho - i guess they are mass producing them and some bad ones get thru - i know i got one that did - my 975SBT is much better made, fitted, etc than my CQC7, what can i say? my bud has a commander, w/no probs!?!? anyway i'm happy now, i have the 975 i have been looking for, so it dont matter to me lol

Within the last couple weeks, I received a waved CQC7 and a Commander directly from Emerson Knives and they were perfectly set up. Needless to say, I like 'em.

I am impressed with the design and functionality of the Waved knives and have been carrying at least one of them everyday since I bought them.

I'm fairly new to this forum and collecting knives so what I say may not carry much weight. I have a few examples of other brands but I've been converted to the `Harley' camp.
